Griffins Open Season by Going 2-1 at Shaw Tournament

The Griffin softball team opened their 2014 season in Raleigh, NC at the Shaw University Tournament on Saturday afternoon.  Seton Hill took two of the three contests to open the season with a 2-1 record.  The Griffins defeated Virginia Union 9-1 behind a no hitter from Amanda Huff.  Seton HIll dropped the second game of the day by a 3-2 score to Lees-McRae and took home the night cap by the score of 4-2 over Virginia State. 

Seton Hill scored 6 runs in the top of the third in their victory over Virginia Union.  Abby Suhoski got the Griffins on the board with a three run shot in her first collegiate at bat.  Lauren Sauerwein then singled in Jacqui Palmer and Sauerwein and Dani Treaster scored when Christine Henderson reached on an error.  After Virginia Union got a run without a hit in the bottom of the fifth, the Griffins answered with three in the top of the sixth.  Kristina Torretti cleared the bases with a triple to give SHU a 9-1 advantage.  Amanda Huff went the distance, giving up 1 run on no hits and striking out 5.  Henderson, Huff, Torretti and Palmer each had two hits in the win.  Christine Henderson earned her first win of the season in the 4-2 victory over Virginia State.  She struck out 10 in the victory.

The Griffins will close out the tournament with two more contests on Sunday.
