Comeback Attempt Comes up Short as Griffins Fall 37-29 at Fairmont State

Box Score

Seton Hill dropped their opening game of the 2013 season and the first under new head coach Isaac Collins by the score of 37-29 at Fairmont State.  The Griffins trailed 37-10 in the third and roared back with three straight touchdowns but ran out of time on their last possession.

The Griffins forced two turnovers in the games first five minutes but could not take advantage of them, only taking a 3-0 lead.  Josh Falatovich recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff and returned it to the FSU 11 yard line.  The Griffins then missed a 35 yard field goal attempt.  On the next Fairmont possession Tyler Zimmer intercepted a pass and returned it to the FSU 9 yard line.  Jesser Boulnemour hit a 24 yard field goal.  FSU then scored two touchdowns to take a 14-3 lead after the first quarter.

Fairmont extended their lead to 23-3 with 5:38 remaining in the second quarter.  A pick six for Fairmont pushed the lead to 30-3 with 1:19 left in the second quarter.  The Griffins responded with a 61 yard touchdown pass from Nick Halfhill to Norman Darden right before the half to cut the lead to 30-10.

The Falcons extended their lead to 37-10 with a score early in the third quarter.  Darden then caught his second TD pass from Halfhill, this time from 5 yards out to trim the lead to 37-16 with 5:49 left in the third.  Halfhill hooked up with Darden for a third TD catch early in the fourth quarter that cut the FSU lead to 37-23.  Halfhill then connected with Lance Williams on a 4 yard play to trim the lead to 37-29 with 3:58 to play in the game.  The Griffin defense was able to force a punt and give the offense the ball back with just over a minute to play but the Griffins ran out of time, failing to score the game tying touchdown.

Nick Halfhill finished the game 27-42 for 305 yards and 4 touchdowns.  Norman Darden pulled down 8 catches for 121 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Edward Collins finished with 7 receptions for 83 yards.  Tyler Zimmer led the defense with 13 tackles.
