Football Dominates CalU in Homecoming Victory

Seton Hill hosted California (PA) in PSAC West action on Saturday afternoon at Offutt Field as the university celebrated its homecoming on the weekend.

The Griffins made this a homecoming to remember with a dominating performance in a 29-0 shutout win over the Vulcans.  SHU is now 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the west while CalU falls to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the west.

The shutout was the first for the Griffins since the 2023 season when the Griffins won 14-0 at Mercyhurst in early November.

Seton Hill totally dominated the stat sheet in every category, including the one that matters the most, the score.  SHU finished the game with 491 yards of total offense while holding CalU to just 22 yards of total offense.  The Griffins finished with 23 first downs to only 5 for Cal.  The Griffins ran for 154 yards while holding Cal to -7 yards rushing.  SHU threw for 337 yards while holding CalU to 29 yards passing.  The Griffins had the ball for nearly 39 of the 60 minutes of the contest.

Neither team was able to get much going offensively in the first quarter of action as the teams were scoreless after one quarter of play.

Cody Rubrecht's punt pinned the Vulcans back at their own 14 yard line midway through the second quarter.  After a snap over the quarterbacks head with the ball rolling into the endzone, the Griffins took a 2-0 lead on a safety with 5:25 left in the first half.  The Griffins needed just four plays after the free kick to increase their lead.  Timothy Gaynor scored from 13 yards out on a run to give the Griffins a 9-0 lead with 3:02 left in the half.  The Griffins led 9-0 at the halftime break.

The teams just exchanged punts in the third quarter as the Griffins carried the 9-0 lead into the fourth quarter of action.

The Griffins scored on their first possession of the fourth quarter.  The big play on the drive was a 31 yard hook up from Boden St Marie to Jayden Llanos that moved the ball to the CalU 7.  A few plays later, St Marie hit Kai Holmes with an 11 yard touchdown pass to push the Griffin lead to 15-0 with 10:41 to play.  After a Demetri Whitehead interception which gave the Griffins the ball at the Cal 29 yard line, SHU extended their lead on a nine yard touchdown run from Christian Yanosko with 4:38 left as the Griffins led 22-0.  Gaynor closed out the scoring with an 11 yard touchdown run that extended the lead to 29-0 with 1:54 left.

St Marie threw for 337 yards and a touchdown and added 45 yards rushing.  Gaynor rushed for 105 yards and 2 TDs.  Llanos added 7 catches for 119 yards.  Brayden Darrell finished with 7 tackles including 3 TFLs and 2 sacks.

SHU will travel to Slippery Rock for a PSAC West contest next Saturday night.
