The Griffin softball team could be known as the split squad as they split their third straight WVIAC doubleheader. SHU dropped an 8-2 decision to West Liberty in the first game before rallying for a 7-5 victory in game two. The Griffins are now 5-9 overall and 3-3 in WVIAC play.
Seton Hill took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one. After 1 out,
Dani Treaster singled and moved to second on an error. Treaster scored when
Brandi Piccolino singled.
Christine Henderson, who was hit by a pitch, scored on an error to make the score 2-0. West Liberty scored a single run in the second and two in the third to take a 3-2 lead. The Toppers put the game away with 5 runs in the fifth.
Brandi Piccolino was the lone Griffin with 2 hits in game one.
West Liberty jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning in game two. The Griffins got three back in the top half of the second. SHU used two WLU errors, a walk and hit batter to score the three runs.
Brandi Piccolino gave the Griffins a 5-4 lead with a two run homer in the third inning. WLU tied the score at five in the fourth, thanks to a Griffin error. The Griffins took the lead for good in the fifth. After 1 out, Beth Anne Swartzwelder and
Christine Henderson singled. Piccolino singled to score Swartzwelder and give the Griffins a 6-5 lead.
Kaitlyn Kutchman singled to load the bases and
Felicia Domasky was hit by a pitch to force in a run.
Hayley Morgan earned the win in relief. She pitched the final 6 2/3 innings. She gave up 1 unearned run on 4 hits. Piccolino went 2-3 and drove in three.
The Griffins are scheduled to host Indiana (PA) on Tuesday and Ohio Valley on Wednesday.
