The Griffin softball team split a wild doubleader at Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday afternoon. Seton Hill dropped the first game by 19-6 score in 5 innings before responding with a 7-4 victory in 10 innings in game two. The Griffins are now 4-8 overall and 3-3 in WVIAC play.
SHU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one.
Taylor Swatsworth led off with a double, was sacrificed to third by
Dani Treaster and scored on a passed ball. Wheeling didnt waste any time answering as they scored 4 in the first and 4 in the second to take a 8-1 lead. The Griffins scored 5 in the third to cut the lead to 8-6. Swatsworth led off with a single and Treaster reached on an error. After an out,
Christine Henderson doubled in Swatsworth.
Brandi Piccolino then singled to score Treaster.
Kaitlyn Kutchman followed with an RBI single and
Felicia Domasky closed out the scoring with an RBI double. Wheeling got a run back in the third and put up a ten spot in the fourth to close out the scoring. Swatsworth and Kutchman each had two hits in the loss.
Wheeling took a 1-0 lead in game two in the second inning on a solo home run. The Griffins tied the score at one following an RBI single from Alex Alicea in the fourth. WJU retook the lead with two runs in the fourth.
Taylor Swatsworth led off the fifth with a double, was sacrified to third by
Dani Treaster and scored on a Beth Anne Swartzwelder single to cut the lead to 3-2. Swatsworth again led off an inning with a double, this time in the seventh. She moved to third on a ground out and with the Griffins down to their final out,
Christine Henderson singled in Swatsworth to tied the score at 3. The game remained tied unitl the 10th. Using the international tiebreaker,
Lauren Sauerwein was placed on second to start the inning.
Felicia Domasky singled in Sauerwein to make it 4-3. After a flyout,
Hayley Morgan had an RBI single to make it 5-3. After Swatsworth walked, Treaster singled in Morgan to make it 6-3 and Swatsworth scored on a passed ball to increase the lead to 7-3. Wheeling got one run in the 10th but it was not enough.
Brandi Piccolino went 4-5 in the second game.
Taylor Swatsworth and
Dani Treaster each had 3 hits.
Christine Henderson went all 10 innings in the circle to earn the win. She struck out 7.
Seton Hill will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to West Liberty for a WVIAC doubleheader.
