Griffins Split with Shepherd at Home

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 On Saturday the Griffins hosted the Rams of Shepherd University in a double-header conference contest. In game one play went into extra innings and ended with 13-12 Griffins defeat after eight innings of play. In game two the Griffins dominated play defeating the Rams 12-3.
 
In game one after two innings of play the game was tied 5-5. In the third inning the Rams came up empty handed as the Griffins managed to score an additional two runs to take a 7-5 advantage. In the fourth inning both teams came up empty handed. The rams had a big fifth inning scoring 6 runs the Griffins were able to score 2 runs to enter the sixth inning trailing the Rams 11-9. In the sixth inning both teams could not string anything together at the plate. The hitting rut continued into the seventh inning for the Rams. With the pressure on needing to score to keep their hopes of winning alive The Griffins scored 2 runs to tie the game 11-11 and send the game into extra innings. In the eighth the Rams scored 2 runs off of three hits to take the lead 13-11. For the Griffins Dani Treaster got things started off with a single. She advanced to second base on a fly out from Christine Henderson and stole third to put her in scoring position with one out. With all that action the international tiebreaker who started the inning off on second scored making it 12-13. Brandi Piccolino and Kaitlyn Kutchman both singled to load the bases. Lauren Sauerwein hit a ball to the infield forcing the out at home but keeping the bases loaded with two outs. Alex Alicea then stepped up to the plate. However, she hit a foul pop up right by the Rams first baseman that made the catch ending the game 13-12.
 
In game two there was no action in the first inning.  The Rams managed to score 1 run in the second while the Griffins scored 6 runs off of 6 hits to take a 6-1 lead. In the third the Rams continued to struggle at the plate. To start things off for the Griffins in the third Kutchman earned a triple. Alicea then earned an RBI single advancing lead 7-1. A sacrificed bunt by Morgan advanced runners to second and third. Taylor Swatsworth earned an RBI ground out making it 8-1. Treaster stepped up next and earned an RBI single increasing the lead once again 9-1. Henderson was walked and Piccolino doubled to expand the Griffin lead 11-1. In the fourth for the Rams they scored 2 runs closing the gap on Seton Hill 11-3. In the fourth for the Griffins Alicea singled and Domasky made it to first on an error by the first baseman. Alicea scored on a ground out by Morgan making it 12-3. In the fifth the Rams came up empty handed giving the Griffins the 12-3 victory.
 
With the split the Griffins now stand at 13-19 overall and 12-12 in WVIAC conference play. They will travel to Alderson-Broaddus on Monday for their last conference double header. Game is scheduled to start at 4:30.
