The Griffin softball team continued to split its WVIAC doubleheaders with a split at WV Wesleyan on Thursday afternoon. WV Wesleyan took the first game 20-1 in 5 innings before the Griffins came back with a 5-2 win in game two. SHU is now 7-13 overall and 6-6 in WVIAC play.
WV Wesleyan scored 4 runs in the bottom of the first in game one. The Griffins scored one in the top of the second when
Christine Henderson doubled in
Brandi Piccolino, who also doubled. WV Wesleyan put the game away with 10 runs in the bottom of the second. Henderson, Piccolino and Beth Anne Swartzwelder all doubled in game one for the Griffins.
Neither team was able to crack the scoreboard in game two until WV Wesleyan scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning. SHU trailed 2-0 heading into the top of the seventh. After one out,
Kaitlyn Kutchman singled. Kutchman was then erased on a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning.
Christine Henderson singled to keep the inning alive. After two WV Wesleyan errors led to a Griffin run, Alex Alicea stepped to the plate and hit a game winning grand slam to right field to give the Griffins a 5-2 advantage. Alicea was 2-3 in the contest with the 4 RBI. Henderson earned the win in the circle. She gave up 2 runs on 5 hits and struck out 2.
SHU returns to action on Saturday when they host Bluefield State.
