Griffins Drop Two in Salem, Va

The Griffin softball team dropped a pair of games in the WV Wesleyan Tournament on Saturday afternoon.  SHU fell by a 9-0 score to Kutztown in the first game and then dropped a 6-4 decision to Shippensburg in their second game of the day.  The Griffins fall to 1-5 on the season. 

Kutztown took a 2-0 lead after three innings.  Kutztown extended their lead to 7-0 in the fifth and ended the game with 2 runs in the sixth.  Christine Henderson had 2 hits for the Griffins in game one.

Dani Treaster reached on an error and scored on a Brandi Piccolino single to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead over Shippensburg in the first inning.  Taylor Swatsworth doubled in Beth Anne Swartzwelder in the second to give the Griffins a 2-0 lead.  Ship controlled the middle innings, scoring 1 in the second, 2 in the third, 1 in the fourth and 2 in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead.  The Griffins rallied in the seventh but came up just short.  Swatsworth singled to lead off the inning.  After two outs, Piccolino singled in a run to cut the lead to 6-3.  After a Lauren Sauerwein single, Swartzwelder doubled off the wall in right center to cut the lead to 6-4.  A foul out ended the game.

Lauren Sauerwein and Beth Anne Swartzwelder each had three hits.  Brandi Piccolino and Taylor Swatsworth each had two hits.

Seton Hill will close out the tournament with a game against Bloomsburg on Sunday.
