The Griffin softball team opened its season at the Shaw Tournament in Raleigh, NC on Friday afternoon. Seton Hill rode the arm of
Christine Henderson for a 2-0 victory over Fayetteville State in the opening contest and then dropped a 9-1 decision in 6 innings against Mount Olive to close out the day.
Christine Henderson went the distance and struck out 10 in the Griffins victory over Fayetteville State. She gave up just 4 hits and walked none. The Griffins scored both of their runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Kaitlyn Kutchman started off the inning with a single. She was moved up on a sacrifice bunt from
Lauren Sauerwein.
Taylor Swatsworth then doubled to left scoring Kutchman. Swatsworth then scored on an error on Fayetteville State. Swatsworth was 2-2 for the Griffins.
Mount Olive jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. They added on with 5 runs in the third. In the Griffin fifth,
Stefanie Wiegand doubled with one out. She stole third and scored on a single from Beth Anne Swartzwelder to cut the lead to 6-1. Mount Olive added two more in the fifth and ended the game with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth. Henderson had two hits in the loss.
Dani Treaster suffered the loss in the circle. She lasted 2 1/3 innings, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits. She walked 2 and struck out 1.
The Griffins will battle Ohio Valley and Fayetteville State on Saturday afternoon.
