The Seton Hill Griffins Women's Basketball team defeated the Shepherd University Rams 72-62 in the second day of the 28
th annual Carol Eckman Classic hosted by West Chester University on Saturday. Seton Hill rallied from 11 points down at the half for the victory to improve to 3-0 on the season
The Griffins opened up by scoring seven seconds into the game with a layup by
Meghan Mastroianni. That would be the last lead the Griffins would hold in the first half. Shepherd led 12-8 before a
Mallory Sanner jumper cut the lead to 12-10 with 12:36 to play. The Rams then went on a 11-1 run to take a 23-11 lead. SHU responded with a 9-0 run of their own to trim the lead to 23-20 with 5:47 to play in the half. Shepherd would then end the half on a 15-7 run to take a 38-27 halftime lead.
Katie Gattuso scored the first four points of the second half to trim the lead to 7 but Shepherd pushed the lead right back to 12 at 43-31 with 17:50 to play. The Griffin defense them stepped it up and used a 10-0 run to cut the lead to two. Two free throws from
Paige Alviani tied the score at 45 with 13:02 to play. Another Gattuso bucket broke a 49 all tie at the 9:36 mark. Shepherd trailed by just two after the under 8 media timeout but a quick 8-0 run from the Griffins pushed the lead to 10 and the Griffins would never look back.
Katie Gattuso and
Paige Alviani lead the team with a combined 51 points, 26 and 25 respectively. Gattuso recorded her second double double of the game by adding 14 rebounds. Alviani also added 8 rebounds.
Meghan Mastroianni,
Tiara Stossel and
Kelly Brennan each added 6 points.
The Griffins will open up PSAC West play this Wednesday, November 20
th in Erie, Pennsylvania against Mercyhurst University at 5:30 PM.
