The winning ways continue for the Seton Hill women's basketball team as they picked up their eighth straight victory of the season. Seton Hill took a 45-35 halftime lead and cruised to an 88-80 victory over Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday afternoon. The Griffins improve to 8-4 overall and 5-1 in WVIAC play.
Seton Hill started off the contest a little slugglishly falling behind by a 5-2 score. The SHU offense then began to pick it up and used a 16-6 run to take a 16-11 lead following a
Katie Gattuso layup at the 14:13 mark. WJU was able to battle back and pushed their lead to 27-20 with just under nine minutes to play in the half.
Kelly Brennan hit back to back lay ups and
Tiara Stossel followed with a three pointer to cut the lead to 2 at 29-27.
Clare Berenato then hit two free throws to tie the contest at 29. SHU then closed out the first half on a 14-4 run to take a 45-35 lead into the halftime break.
Everytime in the second half Wheeling would make a run the Griffins would have a response. After Wheeling cut the lead to 52-47, Stossel answered with a three pointer to push the lead back to 8 at 55-47 with 15:56 to play. WJU then cut the lead to 60-56 with 11:05 to play before Gattuso went 5-6 from the line to push the lead back to 9 at 65-56. The final run from Wheeling Jesuit was ended when
Paige Alviani and Stossel hit back to back to back three's to push the lead to 12 and Wheeling would never threaten the Griffins again.
Katie Gattuso had another monster game as she finished with 21 points and 18 rebounds. It's her eighth double double of the season. She also added 6 assists.
Paige Alviani also scored 21 points. Paige added 7 steals and 5 assists.
Tiara Stossel tossed in 16 points while
Kelly Brennan came off the bench to score 13.
Meghan Mastroianni rounded out the Griffins in double figures with 10 points.
Seton Hill will travel to Fairmont State on Monday for a 4 PM tip.
