Sanner Provides Spark as Griffins Defeat Davis & Elkins

Box Score

Griffin forward Mallory Sanner provided the Griffins the spark they needed to break a streak where they had lost four of their previous five contests as the Griffins defeated Davis & Elkins 59-53 on Thursday evening.  Sanner had 7 steals in 9 minutes of play in the first half as the Griffins jumped out to a 24-19 halftime lead.  Seton Hill improves to 12-9 overall and 9-6 in WVIAC play.

Seton Hill came out of the gate strong and took a 9-4 lead five minutes into the contest.  After D&E hit a jumper to cut the lead to 9-6, SHU went on a 7-2 run to take a 16-8 lead with 8:07 to play.  SHU then went cold from the floor and didnt score again until the 2:46 mark when Mallory Sanner converted a steal into a layup.  SHU led 18-17 at that point.  Sanner followed with another bucket and three more steals from Sanner set up two more Griffin buckets to give the Griffins a 24-19 halftime lead.

Davis & Elkins tied the score at 26 with 16:28 to play in the second half and then held the lead until the 5:55 mark of the second half.  A layin from Meghan Mastroianni tied the score at 42 with 5:55 to play.  Buckets from Tiara Stossel and Clare Berenato increased the lead to 46-42 with 4:43 to play.  D&E then took the lead after Katie Gattuso picked up a foul and followed it with a technical foul.  D&E led 47-46 with 3:36 to play following three free throws and a layup.  The Griffins took the lead back for good when Sanner drilled a three pointer with 3:10 to play which gave them a 49-47 lead.  After D&E hit one of two free throws, Paige Alviani hit a three from the top of the key to extend the lead to 52-48.  After a defensive stop, Sanner was fouled and calmly hit both ends of a 1&1 to give SHU a 54-48 lead with 1:00 to play.  SHU was able to secure the victory by hitting 3 of 4 from the line.

Katie Gattuso scored a team high 14 points.  Mallory Sanner finished with 12 points, 8 steals, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks.  Paige Alviani also added 12 points and 5 assists.
