Mallory Sanner provided the Griffins the spark they needed to break a streak where they had lost four of their previous five contests as the Griffins defeated Davis & Elkins 59-53 on Thursday evening. Sanner had 7 steals in 9 minutes of play in the first half as the Griffins jumped out to a 24-19 halftime lead. Seton Hill improves to 12-9 overall and 9-6 in WVIAC play.
Seton Hill came out of the gate strong and took a 9-4 lead five minutes into the contest. After D&E hit a jumper to cut the lead to 9-6, SHU went on a 7-2 run to take a 16-8 lead with 8:07 to play. SHU then went cold from the floor and didnt score again until the 2:46 mark when
Mallory Sanner converted a steal into a layup. SHU led 18-17 at that point. Sanner followed with another bucket and three more steals from Sanner set up two more Griffin buckets to give the Griffins a 24-19 halftime lead.
Davis & Elkins tied the score at 26 with 16:28 to play in the second half and then held the lead until the 5:55 mark of the second half. A layin from
Meghan Mastroianni tied the score at 42 with 5:55 to play. Buckets from
Tiara Stossel and
Clare Berenato increased the lead to 46-42 with 4:43 to play. D&E then took the lead after
Katie Gattuso picked up a foul and followed it with a technical foul. D&E led 47-46 with 3:36 to play following three free throws and a layup. The Griffins took the lead back for good when Sanner drilled a three pointer with 3:10 to play which gave them a 49-47 lead. After D&E hit one of two free throws,
Paige Alviani hit a three from the top of the key to extend the lead to 52-48. After a defensive stop, Sanner was fouled and calmly hit both ends of a 1&1 to give SHU a 54-48 lead with 1:00 to play. SHU was able to secure the victory by hitting 3 of 4 from the line.
Katie Gattuso scored a team high 14 points.
Mallory Sanner finished with 12 points, 8 steals, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks.
Paige Alviani also added 12 points and 5 assists.
