The Griffin women made the trip to Elkins, WV looking for their first victory of the season and came away with a 67-64 road win. Seton Hill improves to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in WVIAC play.
Davis & Elkins opened the game on a 10-2 run before the Griffins made a run of their own and took a 14-12 lead with 13:25 to play in the first half.
Paige Alviani and
Katie Gattuso each scored 4 points during the run. SHU was able to push the lead to 24-19 with 6:55 left in the first half. Seton Hill entered the halftime break with a 34-31 lead.
Seton Hill had a great start to the second half and pushed their lead out to 59-46 on a
Kelly Brennan bucket with 9:20 to play in the half. Brennan scored 6 straight points. The Griffins would then hit a cold spell and not make another bucket until the 2:45 mark when Alviani connected. The Griffins trailed 62-61 after the Alviani bucket. After a defensive stop,
Mallory Sanner drilled a three pointer to give the Griffins a 64-62 lead with just over two minutes to play. The Griffins would not give up the lead from that point. Alviani hit a jumper to push the lead four at 66-62 with 1:25 to play. D&E responded with a basket of their own to cut the lead back to two with 1:10 to play. Alviani hit one of two free throws and the Griffin defense kept the Senators off the scoreboard the rest of the game to escape with the 67-64 victory.
Paige Alviani led the Griffins with 19 points.
Katie Gattuso added 16 points and
Mallory Sanner was the third Griffin in double figures with 10 points.
Kelly Brennan also added 9 points off the bench. Sanner led the Griffins with 9 rebounds. Gattuso added 7 assists.
The Griffins will look to make it two in a row when they host Ohio Valley on Saturday afternoon at 2 PM
