Box Score On Tuesday night the Griffins opened up WVIAC conference play as they hosted the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State. The Griffins defense could not hold the Yellow Jackets down the stretch, which led to a 77-71 Seton Hill defeat.
In the first half both teams battled during every possession. The game was tied 10 times as well as having 10 lead changes throughout the first. Halfway through at the 9:55 mark WV State was up 24-20 over Seton Hill. Two foul shots by
Katie Gattuso and a layup from
Paige Alviani tied the game 24-24.
Mallory Sanner then gave the Griffins the lead with a 3-point play making it a 27-24 contest. The Yellow Jackets made a comeback and tied the game once again 33-33 with 2:37 remaining in the half. A Megan Mastroianni jumper followed by a
Tiara Stossel jumper gave them the four-point lead 37-33. The Yellow Jackets managed to score one last basket before the buzzer heading into halftime trailing Seton Hill 37-35
The second half started the same way the first half left off. One team would take the lead then lose it seconds later. Four minutes into action the game was tied 43-43. Over the next two minutes the Yellow Jackets outscored the Griffins 8-2 earning their largest lead of the game 51-45 at the 15:07 mark. The Griffins managed to close the gap 53-52. However, WV State went on 8-0 run increasing their lead over Seton Hill 61-52 with 11:22 left on the clock. Over the next five minutes the Griffins were able to tie the game up 65-65. A layup from Alviani and two good free throws gave the Griffins back the lead 69-65 at the 3:54 mark. The Yellow Jackets answered right back with a 3 pointer making it a 69-68 contest. The Griffins defense could not stop the Yellow Jackets as they went on a critical 6-0 in the final minutes of play to give them a six-point lead 75-69 with .39 seconds remaining in the game. Stossel tried to get momentum going for Seton Hill with a bucket making it 75-71, but The Griffins could not make up the deficit before the final buzzer suffering a 77-71 loss.
The Griffins had four players in double digits.
Katie Gattuso led the offense recording her second double double of the season earning 18 points and pulling down 14 rebounds.
Tiara Stossel scored 17 points,
Paige Alviani added 12 points, and
Clare Berenato chipped in 10 points. With the loss Seton Hill now stands at 0-3 overall and 0-1 in WVIAC conference play. The Griffins will host California University (PA) next on Sunday, November 25
th, at 2:00 PM.
