Seton Hill made the trip up I-79 to Erie for a PSAC Quarterfinal matchup with second seeded Gannon on Wednesday evening.
The Griffins took a late lead over the Golden Knights but Gannon scored 10 of the last 11 points to earn a 60-52 victory over the Griffins. SHU falls to 23-6 overall while Gannon improves to 25-5.
Gannon took an early 5-2 lead over the Griffins but SHU responded with a 10-0 run to take a 12-5 lead at the first quarter media timeout.
Sakeria Haralson and
Abby Mankins scored baskets while Helene and
Hallie Cowan ended the run with three pointers. The Knights cut the lead to 14-13 but
Helene Cowan hit a shot from just inside the half court line to give SHU a 17-13 lead after one.
A teal and layup from
Mia Kalich put the Griffins in front 21-16 with 7:17 to play in the second quarter. Back to back layups from
Hallie Cowan and Kalich forced a Gannon timeout with the Griffins leading 25-19 with six minutes left in the half. Gannon answered back with a 7-2 run as they but the Griffin lead to 27-26 with 3:08 left. Gannon hit a shot with three seconds left to tie the contest at 30.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the second half as the team combined for just 11 points in the first five minutes of the half. Gannon led 36-35 at the third quarter media timeout. A
Shaye Bailey layup and a pair of free throws from
Helene Cowan tied the game at 39 with a minute left in the third.
Four straight from Haralson put the Griffins in front 43-41 with 7:25 left in the fourth.
Helene Cowan answered a 6-0 Gannon run with a three pointer to trim the lead to 47-46 with 4:46 to play. Five straight from
Helene Cowan gave SHU a 51-50 lead with 3:10 to play. Gannon answered with seven straight to take a 57-51 lead with 1:52 left.
Helene Cowan led SHU with 17 points. Haralson added a double double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Hallie Cowan added nine points.
The Griffins now must wait until Sunday evening's NCAA Selection show to see what seed they will earn as an at large in the NCAA Tournament.
