Griffins Rally for 27-24 Win Over West Chester

Seton Hill closed out the non PSAC West part of their schedule with a PSAC Crossover matchup with West Chester on Saturday afternoon in Greensburg.

The Griffins scored the final 13 points of the contest as they rallied for a 27-24 victory over the Golden Rams.  SHU is now 2-2 on the season while West Chester drops to 0-3 overall.

Neither team was able to score in the first quarter of action.  The Griffins ended a long first drive for West Chester on a Demitri Whitehead interception that stopped a 13 play, 64 yard drive.  SHU drove into WCU territory but was forced to punt.  The Griffin defense then forced a punt and the Griffins took over at their own 46 as the quarter ended.

Jake Cruz found Ethan Fame for a 39 yard pass which set up a Jason Williams seven yard touchdown run which gave SHU a 7-0 lead with 13:41 left in the second quarter.  David Awuah ended the nest West Chester drive with an interception in the end zone.  After a Griffin punt, West Chester used an 84 yard touchdown pass to tie the score at seven with 5:25 to play in the half.  It only took the Griffins two plays to respond as Cruz found Todd Phillips with a 74 yard touchdown pass to take a 14-7 lead with 4:35 to play in the half.  Awuah picked off his second pass of the game at the SHU three yard line to end the next West Chester drive and sent the game to the half with SHU leading 14-7.

SHU turned the ball over on downs on their first drive deep in their own territory which led to a short West Chester touchdown drive which tied the score at 14 with 12:14 to play.  The game then had a long lightning delay.  When play resumed the Griffins went three and out and West Chester drove 55 yards in seven plays to take a 21-14 lead with 6:33 left in the third.  Late in the third quarter, the Rams connected on a 50 yard field goal to extend the lead to 24-14 with 1:53 left.

Ky'Ron Craggette capped off a 76 yard drive with a five yard touchdown run which cut the lead to 24-21 with 11:51 to play.  SHU then forced another turnover as Ritchie McCormack forced a fumble and Wyatt Schussler recovered at the SHU 16 yard line.  Midway through the quarter, Quinton Posey picked off a WCU pass.  SHU started their game winning drive with 2:51 to play.  An early big play on the drive was a 10 yard completion from Cruz to Taiyon Battle on a fourth and five.  Cruz found Cody Rubrecht on a 25 yard catch to move the ball to the 12.  Craggette then capped off the drive with a 12 yard touchdown run to put SHU in front 27-24 with 1:03 to play.  The Griffin defense then stopped West Chester on their final drive to close out the win.

The stats were very close in the contest.  West Chester had 22 first downs to 21 for the Griffins.  SHU finished with 422 yards of offense to 410 for the Rams.  The big difference in the contest was five West Chester turnovers to just one for SHU.

Cruz threw for 237 yards and a touchdown.  Craggette ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns.  Fame and Battle each had four catches.  Phillips had 80 yards and a touchdown.  McCormack led the defense with nine tackles.  Awuah had two interceptions and Schussler added two sacks.

The Griffins are off next weekend before traveling to Gannon for the PSAC West opener.
