Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Three Point Shooting Carries Griffins to PSAC West Win.

Seton Hill continued a tough stretch of games as they close out the first half of the PSAC West schedule with three games in five days.  The Griffins continued that stretch with a home game against Pitt Johnstown on Monday evening.

The Griffins made 14 three pointers and pulled away in the late portion of the game for an 85-70 victory over UPJ.  SHU is now 12-7 overall and 7-6 in the PSAC.

In a sign of things to come, Ryan Meis and Jimmy Moon hit back to back three pointers to open the game and give SHU an early 6-0 lead.  Five straight points from Dimitrios Sklavenitis gave SHU an 11-8 lead with 16 minutes to play in the first half.  UPJ answered with a 7-0 run to take a 15-11 lead.  Moon ended the run with a three pointer that cut the UPJ lead to 15-14 with 12:49 to play in the first half.

Two three pointers gave UPJ a 26-20 lead with 7:53 to play in the half.  Back to back baskets from Caleb Whitaker cut the lead to two but another UPJ three pushed the lead back to five with six minutes left.  UPJ extended the lead to seven before the Griffins scored five straight to cut the lead back to two.  A Meis three and two Kedrick Curtis free throws put the Griffins back in front 34-33 with 2:13 left.  UPJ went back up by four with less than a minute to play but a Drew Green layup and a buzzer beater from Camden Brewer put SHU in front 39-38 at the half.

Each team hit seven three pointers in the first half.

Like the first half, SHU opened the second half with back to back threes from Sklavenitis and Meis as they built a 45-38 lead.  Green hit another three but UPJ scored five straight to trim the lead to 48-46 with 16:45 to play.  Brian Belade hit a layup and Curtis added back to back threes as SHU built their lead to ten at 56-46 with 13:36 left.  UPJ answered with an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 56-54 midway through the half.

A three point play from Whitaker and a Brewer basket gave SHU a 63-55 lead with 8:50 left.  Pitt Johnstown was able to get back to within seven, 75-68 with four minutes to play but the Griffins outscored them 10-2 over the final four minutes to close out the win.

The Griffins finished the contest with 14 three pointers.

Meis led four Griffins in double figures with 16 points.  Whitaker finished with 15 points.  Sklavenitis tossed in 13 and Green scored ten.  Moon and Curtis each finished with nine.

Seton Hill will travel to Gannon for another PSAC West contest on Wednesday evening.
