1/10/2024 10:33:00 PM

Box Score The Griffin men made the short trip on I-70 to California for a PSAC West matchup with the #13 Vulcans on Wednesday evening.

California was able to pull away in the second half for a 77-64 win over the Griffins.  SHU falls to 9-5 overall and 4-4 in the PSAC.

SHU used three pointers from Drew Green and Ryan Meis and a Caleb Whitaker jumper to take an early 8-6 lead over the Vulcans.  A quick 7-0 run from the Griffins on three points from Dimitrios Sklavenitis and four points from Green gave SHU a 15-8 lead with 14:42 to play in the first half.  CalU responded with eight straight to tie the game at 15.  Baskets from Whitaker and Sklavenitis put the Griffins in front 19-15 midway through the half.

Two Brian Belade free throws put the Griffins in front 23-19 with eight minutes to play.  That would be the last lead the Griffins would hold as Cal went on a 9-0 run to build a 28-23 lead with 4:32 to play.  Four straight points from Kedrick Curtis trimmed the lead to 31-29 with 2:25 left.  Cal carried a 36-31 lead into the halftime break.

Whitaker got the Griffins back to within three with the first basket of the second half but the Vulcans responded with a 6-0 run to build the lead back to nine.  A 10-0 run from the Vulcans extended their lead to 52-34 with 13:37 left in the contest.  Three pointers from Curtis and Meis and a Green free throw cut the lead to 52-41 with 11:49 left.  Three points from Curtis and a three from Meis trimmed the lead to 54-47 midway through the second half.

Five straight Griffin points from Whitaker trimmed the lead back to seven with four minutes to play but that would be as close as the Griffins would get.

Whitaker led the Griffins with 16 points.  Green finished with 15 points.  Meis added 13 points and Curtis tossed in 12.

Seton Hill will travel to Clarion on Saturday for another PSAC West contest.
