Seton Hill closed out a busy day of sports on the Hill with a Homecoming contest against Gannon at Offutt Field in Greensburg on Saturday afternoon.
Gannon scored points in each quarter and the Griffins could only manage a 93 yard kickoff return in a 23-6 loss to the Golden Knights. SHU falls to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the west while the Golden Knights improve to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in the west.
Both teams exchanged punts on their first two possessions of the game.
Jack Wagner's punt was downed at the Gannon one yard line as Gannon started their third possession of the contest. The field position was not a problem for Gannon as they drove 99 yards on 12 plays to take a 7-0 lead with seven seconds left in the first half.
After the Griffins went three and out to open the second quarter, Gannon went 68 yards in seven plays to set up a 37 yard field goal which extended their lead to 10-0 with 11 minutes left in the half. Another three and out led to another Gannon field goal, this one from 41 yards out to push their lead to 13-0 with 7:20 to play. Gannon carried the 13-0 lead into the halftime break.
On their second drive of the second half, the Golden Knights extended their lead to 16-0 with a 30 yard field goal with 1:25 to play in the third.
Demetri Whitehead then returned the kickoff back 93 yards to the house to trim the Gannon lead to 16-6. The two point conversion failed.
Late in the fourth quarter, Gannon broke a 74 yard touchdown run to close out the scoring.
Mark Bails Jr, finished with five catches for 38 yards.
Jayden Llanos had three catches for 46 yards. The Griffin kick returners had a good day with Whitehead finishing with 114 kick return yards and
Taz Morris adding 40 return yards.
Musa Tama led the defense with 10 total tackles including a tackle for loss.
Quinton Posey finished with nine tackles. Richard Johnson Jr,
David Awuah and
Ritchie McCormack each had eight tackles.
The Griffins travel to Clarion next week for another PSAC West contest.
