Men First, Women Third at Jim Vargo Invitational

The Griffin track and field teams opened their 2023 outdoor season at the Jim Vargo Invitational hosted by Bellarmine on Friday afternoon.  

The men's team won the invitational with 115 team points while the women placed third with 102 team points.  The men had six first place finishes while the women added four.  

The first place finishes on the men's side included Gabriel McConville in the 800.  He ran a time of 1:57.26.  Hunter Martin was first in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.72.  John Giansante was first in both the long jump and triple jump.  He won the long jump with a leap of 6.09 meters.  John won the triple jump with a mark of 12.90 meters.  Cody Scherle won the javelin with a toss of 51.09 meters.  Angelo Allen topped the shot put with a throw of 13.92 meters.  

On the women's side, Madelyn Fike won the 400 in a time of 1:01.69.  Darby Roth won the 800 with a time of 2:22.13.  Keelin Becker won the long jump with a leap of 4.57 meters.  Sarah Gilliam won the hammer with a toss of 41.82 meters.  

McConville was fourth in the 1500 with a time of 3:58.61.  Martin was sixth in the 200 with a time of 23.60.  

Andrew Campbell placed third in the 100 (11.09).  Ben Hartman was third in the 100 hurdles (15.36).  Theologis Petridis placed sixth in the long jump (5.30m).  Dwight Sarver was fourth in the discus while Max Yonko was fifth.  Sarver threw 40.42 meters while Yonko threw 39.90 meters.  Jaden Lopez was fourth in the hammer and Xander Zilka was fifth.  Lopez threw 42.84 meters while Zilka threw 41.57 meters.  Cameron Sapola placed second in the javelin and Logan Lindenmuth was third.  Sapola threw 46.83 meters and Lindenmuth threw 38.65 meters.  Zane Baughman was sixth in the shot put (12.37m).  

Anna Roberts was sixth in the 100 (13.00).  Kayla Saylor was fifth and Nora Ozimek was sixth in the 400.  Saylor ran 1:06.05 and Ozimek ran 1:07.47.  Alexis Cunningham was fourth in the 800 (2:25.08) and fifth in the 1500 (4:44.50).  Roth was eighth in the 1500 (4:46.69).  Alyson Taylor was second in the 100 hurdles (15.73).  Blair Harris was fifth in the hammer and Rebekah Daniszewski was eighth.  Harris threw 36.23 meters and Daniszewski threw 32.87 meters.  Alyssa Scalia was second in the javelin (32.67 meters) while Harris was second in the shot put (10.95m) and Gilliam was third (10.81m).

The teams will take part in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational next weekend.
