Seton Hill took part in the NCAA Super Regional at East Stroudsburg on Saturday looking to earn a trip to NCAA Nationals in two weeks.
Junior
John Meyers earned a trip to nationals with a first place finish at 285 pounds. He is the first regional champion for the Griffins since Damon Greenwald won a regional title at 174 pounds in 2018.
Two Griffins just missed out on trips to nationals with fourth place finishes.
William Burgess was fourth at 133 pounds and
Riley O'Mara was fourth at 184 pounds.
Kyle Burkholder and
Brandon Matthews each finished fifth. Burkholder at 125 pounds and Matthews at 174 pounds.
Meyers opened his day with a 9-0 win in his first matchup. He followed that up with a win by fall (1:15) in his quarterfinal. John then won 7-5 in overtime over Daniel Scheib of Shippensburg in the semifinal. Meyers then defeated Isaiah Vance of Pitt Johnstown in the final by a 3-1 score with a late takedown.
Burgess started his day with a 11-2 major decision in the quarterfinals. He then lost to regional champion Eric Bartos of Mercyhurst in the semifinal. Burgess advanced to the third place match with a 10-5 win. William then dropped the third place match to Byron Daubert of UPJ by a 4-2 score.
O'Mara opened with a 15-6 major decision in the quarterfinals. He dropped the semifinal by fall. Riley then won his consolation semifinal by fall in just 49 seconds. O'Mara then dropped the third place match to Austin Gibson of Fairmont State.
Burkholder picked up a major decision and tech fall win to advance to the semifinals. Kyle fell to regional champion Trevon Gray in the semifinals. Burkholder fell 10-5 in the consolation semifinal and then won by fall (1:27) in the fifth place match.
Matthews had two decision wins to advance to the semifinals. Brandon fell to regional champion Dillon Walker of Mercyhurst by a 9-1 score. He fell by decision in the consolation semifinals before a medical forfeit in the fifth place match.
Meyers will wrestle in nationals on March 10 and 11 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
