Seton Hill returned to Kutztown's North Campus Softball Field on Saturday morning for the continuation of game two of the NCAA Atlantic Super Regionals with a chance to advance to the NCAA Division II Softball Championships.
The Griffins made some history and clinched their first ever NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship with a 9-5 win over Kutztown. SHU is now 41-10 on the season.
The Griffins picked up where they left off on Thursday as they scored four times in the bottom of the first inning of game one.
Nichole McClendon singled to lead off the inning.
Jenna Osikowicz reached on an error to put runners on first and third.
Morgan Ryan followed with a single to score McClendon and give SHU a 1-0 lead.
Morgan Toal then lined into a double play with a missile to third base.
Brooklyn Fukushima and
Grace Paredes then both doubled to drive in runs and put the Griffins in front 3-1.
Nina Grandey then reached on a dropped fly ball in center field with the Griffins increasing their lead to 4-0.
Kutztown scored a run back in the top half of the second inning with a one out sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 4-1. The Golden Bears added two more runs in the top of the third inning to cut the Griffins lead to 4-3.
The Griffins used a little two out magic in the fifth. With two outs, Toal singled. Fukushima singled to put runners on first and second. Paredes then lined a ball into the right center field gap to score two runs and increase the SHU lead to 6-3.
The Griffins added three more runs in the sixth.
Mackenzie Zang led off with a single.
Lauren Bertig pinch ran for her. McClendon walked and Osikowicz was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ryan added an RBI with a ground out and Toal drove in two with a single as SHU extended the lead to 9-3.
Kutztown scored twice in the seventh but Ryan got a groundout to Fukushima to end the game and send the Griffins to Denver.
Ryan earned the win in relief. She worked four innings and struck out four. Paredes went 3-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Toal and Fukushima each added two hits. Ryan drove in two.
SHU will now play in this week's NCAA Division II Softball Championships in Denver. The pairings will be announced this weekend.
