Seton Hill came into Saturday needing just one win over West Chester to advance to next week's Super Regionals, but the Rams scored 5-4 and 9-6 (11 innings) victories to win the Regional and advance to Super Regionals next week.
In the opening game, West Chester used a solo home run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead, but Seton Hill came back with three runs in the fourth.
Jack Oberdorf began the inning with a solo home run and that was followed by an RBI double from
Neal McDermott and an RBI single by
Vincenzo Rauso for a 3-1 SHU lead.
The Rams reclaimed the lead with four runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a three-run double with two outs. The WCU lead stayed at 5-3 until the seventh inning when Seton Hill chipped one off when McDermott bounced an RBI single into left field, but the potential tying run was thrown out at the plate on a great throw to keep it a 5-4 score.
The Griffins had two chances to manage the tying run, but were unable to draw even. Seton Hill finished with eight hits in the game, including two each for Oberdorf and McDermott.Â
The starter for Seton Hill was
Kevin Vaupel and he had four Ks before he to be removed in the third inning.
Brian Pirone struck out three in his 2 1/3 innings but allowed four runs.
In the nightcap, West Chester scored first for the third straight game, taking a 1-0 lead in the first. Seton Hill answered right back in the bottom of the inning when
Max Mandler belted a two-run homer, his second of the Regional, for a 2-1 Griffin lead.
The lead bounced back to the Rams in the second with a pair of runs and their advantage grew to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the third. West Chester remained on top 5-2 until a big blow in the fifth inning gave SHU the lead again. With two outs and the bases loaded, McDermott launched an 0-2 pitch out of the park to straight-away center field for a grand slam that made it a 6-5 Seton Hill lead.
Both bullpens took over from there, as no one scored over the next three innings.
Aidan Layton threw three scoreless innings in relief after the early Rams' runs and then
Jack Laird tossed 2 2/3 scoreless frames as the Griffins rallied.
Seton Hill went to the ninth inning holding their 6-5 lead and
Nash Bryan on the hill to try to close it out. West Chester managed to plate the tying run after a pair of hits and a costly error before Bryan stranded the potential go-ahead run at third with a K and pop up.Â
The game carried into the 11th inning when West Chester broke through for three runs for a 9-6 lead. Seton Hill did not have one more rally to pull out and the Rams secured the victory and the spot in the Super Regionals.
McDermott led the offense with another big game, as he went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. He finished the Regional going 12-for-19 with 10 RBIs in the four games. Also posting a pair of hits were
Braden Durham, Oberdorff and
Owen Sabol.
The Griffins finished the season with a 33-19-1 record and their 11th NCAA Regional appearance.
