Costly Second Quarter Leads to PSAC Playoff Exit

Seton Hill hosted Pitt Johnstown on Monday evening in the first round of the PSAC Tournament in the McKenna Center.

It was a rematch of a PSAC West regular season contest from last Wednesday evening.  As they did last Wednesday, the Mountain Cats used a 24-10 quarter to take control of the contest.  On Wednesday, it was the fourth quarter.  In the game on Monday, it was the second quarter as the Cats eliminated the Griffins from the PSAC playoffs with a 78-62 win.  SHU falls to 21-11 overall while UPJ improves to 13-16.

UPJ took an early 5-2 lead on the Griffins but a three pointer from Samantha Kosmacki and a Katie Nolan basket and free throw gave SHU an 8-5 advantage with six minutes to play.  Christiane Frye drained a three pointer that put the Griffins back in front 11-9 with 4:14 to play.  Joi Burleigh's layup tied the score at 13 late in quarter.  UPJ hit a free throw to take a 14-13 lead into the second quarter.

The Mountain Cats took control of the contest using a 13-0 run to start the second quarter.  They hit two baskets and three threes as they built a 27-13 lead with 5:40 to play in the half.  Nolan made a layup to end the UPJ run at the 5:18 mark.  UPJ built their lead to 19 points late in the half but Sonia Sarda hit two free throws then hit layup at the buzzer to trim the lead to 38-23 at the half.

The Cats opened the second half by scoring the first five points to push their advantage to 20 at 43-23.  The lead remained at 20 until the 6:54 mark of the quarter. This is where the Griffins would make a run.  They answered with 13-0 run over a four minute stretch to trim the lead to 47-40.  Frye scored seven of the 13 points for the Griffins during that run which got the Griffin fans back onto their feet.  UPJ pushed their lead back to 11 points before Nolan's basket with 23 seconds left cut the advantage to 53-44 but a long three pointer at the buzzer from UPJ pushed the advantage back to 12 at 56-44 entering the fourth quarter.

For the third straight quarter, the Cats opened the quarter with a run, this one was a quick 6-0 run on two three pointers that extended their lead to eighteen points again.  Seton Hill had one last run in them as Frye hit a three and Trest hit a free throw before Nolan's three point play cut the lead to 69-57 with 4:14 left.  That would be as close as the Griffins would get as UPJ hit seven free throws down the stretch to put the game away.

Frye led the Griffins with 18 points.  Nolan posted another double double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.  Kosmacki and Sarda each scored nine points.
