The Griffin wrestling team sent ten wrestlers to the NCAA Super Region I Championship in Johnstown on Saturday.
The team finished with one wrestler going to nationals and a sixth place finish in the event. Five others had top six finishes including three fourth place finishes.
Joel Cawoski earned a trip to nationals with a second place finish at 141 pounds. Joel opened the day with an 8-0 win in his first match. He followed that up with a 4-3 win in the quarterfinal and a 3-2 win in the semifinals to send him to the 141 pound final. Cawsoki came up short in the final, finishing second.
Frank Bonura,
William Burgess and
Brandon Matthews each finished fourth.
Luke Ewing was fifth and
Logan McKoy was sixth.
Bonura opened the day at 125 pounds and dropped his first match. He made his way through the consolation round wth two major decision wins to move into the third place match. Bonura then fell by fall in the third place match.
Burgess opened the 133 pound bracket with a 7-4 win. He then dropped into the consolation round with a loss by fall. William advanced to the third place final with a 4-2 win. Burgess dropped the third place match by a 7-3 score.
Matthews began the 184 pound bracket with an 8-0 win. He dropped to the consolation round with a tough 9-7 loss in overtime. He then won by fall (1:38) to move into the third place final. He dropped a 10-2 decision in the third place match.
Ewing began with a loss by fall in his first match at 174 pounds. He opened the consolation round with a win by fall (5:40). He picked up a 7-1 win before a loss by fall send him to the fifth place match. Luke placed fifth with a 9-1 win.
McKoy started the 149 pound weight class with a 7-4 loss. He then won two matches by 11-5 and 5-2 scores. He dropped into the fifth place match with a 6-2 loss and then dropped the sixth place match with a 4-1 decision.
Cawoski will wrestle in the NCAA Division II National Championships on March 11th and 12th in St Louis, Missouri.
