Griffin RL Team Knocks Off Unbeaten SUNY Poly

10/27/2022 4:41:00 PM

Seton Hill's Rocket League team faced a tall task Wednesday when they took on an undefeated SUNY Poly squad who entered the match with a 4-0 record and sweeps in each of their victories. But the Griffins would snap that undefeated string with another 4-3 win in a thrilling match that came down to the wire.

The Griffins, who are now 3-2 this season, won the opening game of the night, but after Poly came came to win game two, the teams alternated wins through the first six. With SHU leading 3-2, Poly forced a deciding game with a 6-4 win in game six, meaning Seton Hill would be playing in their third straight seven-game match.

Seton Hill took control early in the seventh game, scoring 25 seconds into the game and striking three times in the first 1:05. The first score came from Aidan Hollander at 4:35 of the game. That was followed by scores from Jack Wagner at 4:05 and again 10 seconds later to lift the Griffins to a 3-0 lead. Poly tried to rally back, as they scored twice 13 seconds apart to slice the SHU lead to 3-2 with 3:30 left in the final game.

The Seton Hill defense stood tall down the stretch, paced by some solid clears by Anthony Panko, and Poly's chances were very limited in the final minutes. The Griffins had a few chances to add an insurance goal down, but one attempt just clipped the crossbar and another was saved by a Poly defender on the goal line. Seton Hill finally added the goal to put the match away with 20 seconds left, as Wagner cleared a ball from SHU's end and Hollander timed it perfectly to punch it in the left side of the goal for the final strike in a 4-2 Griffin win to break Poly's early-season unbeaten stretch.

Seton Hill will look to make it two wins in a row next Wednesday in their next match.
