SHU Overcomes Slow Start for Seventh Straight Win

Seton Hill hosted Mercyhurst in a make up contest from an earlier postponement on Monday afternoon in the McKenna Center.

The Griffins were able to overcome a slow start as they used a big scoring advantage in the middle quarters in route to a 73-62 win over the Lakers.  The win is the seventh in a row for the Griffins.  SHU is now 13-4 on the season and 7-1 in PSAC play while the Lakers drop to 6-9 overall and 4-5 in PSAC play.

SHU got off to a slow start in the first quarter while the Lakers started off fast.  Meryhurst shot 54% from the floor including 4-6 from three point land as they jumped out to a 20-10 lead after one quarter of play.  SHU was just 3-15 from the floor in the first quarter. 

Back to back layups from Katie Nolan and Cheyenne Trest gave SHU an early 4-3 lead but the Lakers responded with nine straight to to take a 12-4 lead.  Samantha Kosmacki hit a three to end the 9-0 Laker run.  SHU hit three more free throws in the quarter as they trailed by ten points after one.  

The Lakers got two baskets around two Cheyenne Trest free throws as they took a 24-12 lead with 8:32 to play in the half.  Over the next five minutes, the Griffins went on a 15-0 run to take a 27-24 lead.  Christiane Frye, Kosmacki and Nolan each hit two buckets during the run.  Mercyhurst responded with an 8-2 to close out the half, taking a 32-29 lead into the halftime break.  

Two Kosmacki free throws gave the Griffins a 37-36 lead with 6:50 to play in the third.  Back to back layups from Trest put the Griffins in front 41-39 midway through the quarter.  After the Lakers tied the score at 43 with four minutes to play, the Griffins ended the quarter on a 10-2 run as they took a 53-45 lead.  Sonia Sarda and Rena Enterline each hit three pointers during the run.  

A three point play from Nolan gave SHU a 56-45 lead early in the fourth quarter.  The Lakers answered back with seven straight to cut the lead to 56-52 with eight minutes to play.  Frye then hit a layup and Nolan added another three point play as the Griffins built their lead back to 61-52 with 6:41 to play.  The Lakers got back to within six twice down the stretch but Nolan answered each of those baskets and the Griffins were able to hit their free throws down the stretch to close out the win.

SHU was able to force 18 Laker turnovers which led to 23 points for the Griffins.  

Nolan tied for game high honors with a double double of 20 points and 15 rebounds.  Kosmacki finished with 17 points.  Trest also reached double figures with 13 points.  Frye just missed double figures with eight points.

The Griffins will now host IUP in a key PSAC West and Atlantic Regional contest on Wednesday evening at 5:30 PM.
