Defense Carries Griffins to Win Over Bloomsburg

Seton Hill hosted Bloomsburg on Saturday evening at Offutt Field in Greensburg, PA in a PSAC Crossover contest.  The Griffin defense was stellar throughout the contest, holding Bloomsburg to just 150 yards, carrying the Griffins to a 13-7 win over the Huskies.  Seton Hill improves to 2-0 on the season while the Huskies dropped to 0-2.  It is the first 2-0 start for the Griffins since the 2016 season.

Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard in the first quarter.  The Griffin defense forced two punts in the first half while the offense had one drive end on a turnover on downs on the Huskies 27 yard line while their second drive ended with a missed field goal.

Starting the second quarter, the Griffins forced a short punt and started their possession on the Bloomsburg 43 yard line.  JaiQuawn McGriff rushed for 27 yards on the first two plays and capped the drive with a four yard touchdown run to give the Griffins a 7-0 lead with 12:15 left in the first half.  A fumble on a muffed punt midway through the second quarter gave Bloomsburg the ball at the Griffin 12 yard line.  They needed just three plays to score on the short field and tie the game at seven with 6:03 to play in the half.  After another fumble on a muffed punt, the Huskies took over at the SHU six yard line with 23 seconds to play in the half.  After a completion, Alexander Wade sacked the Huskie QB which allowed the half to end and kept the game tied at seven heading to the half.

Seton Hill drove to the Bloomsburg 11 yard line on their first possession of the second half but an interception ended the SHU drive.  The next three drives also ended on turnovers, the last one was an interception by Cartier Gray who returned it 47 yards to the Bloomsburg eight yard line.  The Griffins could not punch it in and had to settle for a 19 yard field goal from Luke Hauger.  The field goal gave the Griffins a 10-7 lead with 2:30 to play in the third quarter.  SHU carried that 10-7 lead into the fourth quarter.

After forcing a punt by the Huskies, the Griffins drove to the Bloomsburg 28 yard line but were forced to turn it over on downs.  Two plays into the Huskie's next drive, Jayden Emberton-Gaines forced a fumble and Nelson Gedeon recovered it at the Huskies 33 yard line.  Logan Wiland rushed for 21 yards on the drive but SHU had to settle for a 25 yard field goal to put the Griffins in front 13-7 with 4:41 to play.  Bloomsburg hit a big 45 yard pass on their next drive to move into Griffin territory late in the contest.  Bloomsburg got to the SHU 17 yard line but faced a fourth and six with 1:14 to play.  Emberton-Gaines ended that drive and the Huskies hope with a sack, giving the ball back to the Griffins.  SHU was able to run victory formation and run out the clock for the win.

The Griffins dominated the stats in the contest.  SHU had 18 first downs to just eight for Bloomsburg.  The Griffins out rushed the Huskies by a 195-46 margin.  Total yards were 350 for the Griffins to just 165 for Bloomsburg.  SHU held the ball for 35 minutes to just 25 for Bloomsburg.

Chris Jones was 14-26 for 155 yards.  Wiland finished with 113 yards on 16 carries.  McGriff rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown.  McGriff also caught three passes for 40 yards.  Taro Gaither added two catches for 49 yards.

Narrio Walks led the defensive effort with 14 total tackles including two for loss.  Jaylen McDuffie added nine total tackles.  Emberton-Gaines had six tackles and two sacks.  Joshua Darisme and Justice Griffin each had 2.5 tackles for loss.

Seton Hill will continue PSAC Crossover action next weekend when they travel to Kutztown for a 12 noon kickoff.
