Looking Back at a Memorable 2021 Spring Season

7/21/2021 3:17:00 PM

The 2021 Spring Sports season will be one that will be remembered for a long time by anyone associated with the Athletic Department at Seton Hill.  First off, the spring sports season marked the return of regular athletic competition after nearly a year long break due to the CoVID-19 pandemic which wiped out most of the 2020 spring season and the 2020 fall and 2020-21 winter seasons.  The main reason the season will be remembered will be for the many successes on the playing field and in the classroom.  The spring was highlighted by two NCAA National Championships on the track and a NCAA Atlantic Regional title which led to a trip to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championships.  The Griffins won three PSAC Western Division titles and advanced to the conference finals in baseball, softball and men's and women's lacrosse.  The baseball and softball programs each hosted the PSAC finals for the first time in school history and three programs earned NCAA Postseason appearances.  The teams also earned multiple postseason awards including four conference athletes of the year, one rookie of the year, one pitcher of the year, one specialist of the year, one goalkeeper of the year and two conference coach of the year awards.

The awards also rolled in for the Griffins performance in the classroom as well.  To date, the Griffins have had one player named a COSIDA Academic All American, seven athletes named to the CoSIDA Academic All District Teams, two earn PSAC Top 12 Awards and one earn the prestigious Pete Nevins PSAC Scholar Athlete of the Year Award.  In addition many teams were honored by their coaches association with academic awards.

The top performances of the spring are led by Samuel Hartman who became the first two time NCAA National Champion at Seton Hill.  Hartman won both the 110 meter and 400 meter hurdle titles at the 2021 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Allendale, Michigan.  Hartman won his first national championship by defeating Tyron Lewis of West Texas A&M by .01 to claim his first championship.  Hartman won the 110 meter hurdle title with a time of 13.88 seconds. Hartman won his second national title by .25 seconds over Jackson Blanchard of Grand Valley to claim his second title.  His time in the 400 meter finals was 50.50 seconds.  He is only the third person to pull off the double hurdle title.

The other top performance of the spring was the baseball team winning their second NCAA Atlantic Regional title in school history.  The Griffins defeated Millersville 8-5 in Charleston, WV in the regional final.  Seton Hill advanced to their second appearance in the NCAA Division II Baseball Championships where they opened play with a 4-3 win over Southern New Hampshire.

For the sixth straight year, over 50% of Seton Hill student athletes were named PSAC Scholar Athletes.  Women's basketball athlete Cheyenne Trest, volleyball athlete Viktoria Farian and wrestler Damon Greenwald all earned CoSIDA Academic All District honors.  Farian also earned CoSIDA Academic All American honors.  The women's basketball program was named a special mention to the WBCA Division II Academic Top 25.  The Griffins had the second best GPA in the country but were not eligible for the top 25 as they did not compete this season.  The volleyball program earned the AVCA/USMC Team Academic Award for the eleventh straight season.
