Seton Hill and Wingate met in an elimination contest in the NCAA Division II Baseball Championships on Wednesday afternoon at Coleman Field in Cary, NC.
Â
The Griffins took an early 1-0 lead but the Bulldogs answered with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning and added one more run as they scored five unanswered to eliminate the Griffins with a 5-1 win. SHU ends the season at 39-8.Â
Â
Seton Hill threatened in the top of the first inning when
Jack Oberdorf doubled and
Tommy Pellis singled thru the left side of the infield to put runners on first and third with two outs but a fly out to right field ended the inning.Â
Â
For the first time in the championships, the Griffins were able to score first in a contest as they pushed across a run in the top of the second inning.Â
Owen Sabol singled and stole second to start the inning. After an out,
Tanner Froehlich singled on a 3-0 pitch to knock in Sabol and give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.Â
Â
That lead did not last very long as the Griffins gave up four runs in the bottom half of inning. The inning started with a pop up that was lost in the sun and not caught. A walk followed to put runners on first and second with one out. Three straight RBI hits gave the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead.Â
Â
Wingate added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when they got a clutch two out RBI single on an 0-2 pitch to push their lead to 5-1. Â
Â
The Bulldogs threatened to extend their lead in the sixth inning when they got runners on first and second with no one out but SHU closer
Nash Bryan came on to get the next three outs and keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard.Â
Â
Seton Hill put together one last threat but could not push across a run.Â
Jamie Wrabel led off the inning with a single. After an out,
Canice Ejoh singled to put runners on first and second with one out but a fly out and a called strike three ended the inning.Â
Â
Six different Griffins each had one hit in the contest. Oberdorf had the lone extra base hit with his double. Â
Â
Bryan worked three scoreless innings to keep the game close and give SHU a shot at a rally. He gave up just one hit and struck out three.Â
