Griffins Come up Short in First PSAC Finals Appearance

The Griffins hosted game two of the PSAC Finals series with West Chester with the Golden Rams holding a 1-0 lead over the Griffins with SHU needing two wins to secure their first PSAC title.

SHU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning only to see West Chester answer with three runs in their half of the inning and secured their second PSAC title with a 4-2 win over the Griffins.  SHU is now 32-14 overall on the season while the Golden Rams improve to 30-14.  West Chester secures the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Griffins threatened in the top of the first inning but could not push across a run.  Allison Kapoll drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a Jenna Osikowicz single.  The Rams then got a strikeout, pop out and ground out to strand two Griffins on the bases.

Griffin starter Lauren Dellett held the Rans to just two hits over the first three innings of action.  Dellett then singled to lead off the fourth inning but a base running error by the pinch runner ended up in a double play and ended the SHU threat.

Dellett got a pop out and ground out to strand runners on second and third in the bottom of the fourth.

In the top of the fifth, Alexis Vargas singled with one out.  She moved to second on a ground out and third on a wild pitch.  Mackenzie Zang then came through with a clutch two out, RBI single on a 3-2 pitch to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.

That lead did not last long as West Chester used two bunt base hits and a line drive single to load the bases with no outs.  They used a walk and two sacrifice flies to score three times and take a 3-1 lead.

Osikowicz led off the sixth inning with a single.  She stole second and Dellett drew a walk to put runners on first and second.  After a pop up, Nichole McClendon reached on a bunt base hit and Osikowicz scored on a throwing error which allowed Dellett to move to third.  A double play ended the inning and after the Rams added a run in the bottom of the sixth, the Griffins went 1-2-3 in the seventh to end the game.

Osikowicz finished with two hits to lead the Griffins.  Zang drove in a run for SHU.

SHU must now wait to see if their season will continue when the NCAA announces the field for the Division II Tournament on Sunday evening at 10 PM.
