Seton Hill hosted California (PA) on Friday afternoon with a chance to clinch their first ever PSAC Western Division title with a doubleheader sweep.
The Griffins got a career day from
Nina Grandey but it was not enough as the Griffins split the doubleheader with the Vulcans. SHU scored four times in the second inning in route to a 5-1 win in game one. California scored six runs over the final four innings of game two for a 6-3 win to earn the split of the doubleheader. SHU is now 25-9 overall and 22-6 in PSAC West play while the Vulcans are 18-7 overall and in the west.
The Griffins scored first in game one as they struck for four runs in the bottom of the second inning. With an out,
Alexis Vargas singled and
Christiana Skrabak followed with a single to put runners on first and second. After a pop out,
Samantha Estupinian singled on a 3-2 pitch to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.Â
Nina Grandey then drove a 2-2 pitch over the right field wall for a three run homer as the Griffins took a 4-0 lead over the Vulcans. Â
California got one run back in the top of the third inning before the umpires called for the tarp and the teams waited during a 45 minute rain delay. Â
The teams returned to the field and Griffin starter
Lauren Dellett allowed just two hits the rest of the way to keep the Vulcans off the scoreboard. Â
SHU added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Grandey tripled with one out and scored on a sacrifice bunt by
Nichole McClendon to give SHU a 5-1 lead. Â
Dellett earned her tenth win of the season. She went the distance, gave up one run on three hits, and struck out four. Grandey finished with triple and homer and 3 RBI.Â
Jenna Osikowicz went 3-3 in the win. Â
SHU again took an early lead in game two as they scored in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Skrabak walked and moved to second on a groundout. She scored when Grandey singled off the third base bag to give SHU a 1-0 lead. Â
CalU took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning. The Griffins answered right back in the bottom half of the inning.Â
Allison Kapoll reached on an error to lead off the inning. She moved to second on a bunt from Skrabek. With two outs, Grandey launched a no doubter over the left field fence to put the Griffins back in front 3-2. Â
The Vulcans tied the game in the fifth inning with a solo homer and then scored three times in the top of the sixth inning to take a 6-3 lead. Â
Grandey went 2-3 with a homer and 3 RBI in game two. McClendon also added two hits in the game. Â
The Griffins and Vulcans will close out the four game set on Saturday afternoon in California, PA.
