Defense Carries Griffins to Road Win at Slippery Rock

Seton Hill made the short trip to Slippery Rock to battle the Rock in a PSAC West contest on Wednesday afternoon.

The Griffins used a stifling defense that limited the Rock to just one goal over the final 50 minutes of the contest as the Griffins defeated the Rock by a 14-3 score.  SHU improves to 8-0 overall and 7-0 in the PSAC West.  The Rock falls to 4-6 overall and 3-6 in the West.

The Rock scored twice in the first ten minutes of the contest as they built an early 2-1 lead over the Griffins.  Kate Kada scored the lone Griffin goal in the first ten minutes.  After the Rock scored with 22:47 to play in the half, the Griffins held the Rock off the scoreboard the rest of the half and scored eight goals of their own over the final twenty minutes.

Alyssa Ference tied the score at two with a free position shot goal with 19:52 to play in the half.  Taylor Fox-Trudel scored a man up goal with just less than 14 minutes to play in the half to put the Griffins in front for good.  SHU then scored three times in just over 1:30 as they built a 6-2 lead.  Jaclyn Frank opened the scoring with a free position shot goal and then Kate and Kristi Kada scored to give SHU a four goal advantage.  Elizabeth Tamasitis and Frank hit the back of the cage to extend the SHU lead to 8-2 with 5:10 left.  Kristi Kada scored off a nice feed from Frank with just six seconds to play in the half as SHU led 9-2 as the break.

The second half was low scoring as the Griffins used most of the shot clock on each of their possessions.  The Rock scored the first goal of the half just less than ten minutes into the half.  The first Griffin goal of the second half was a crazy one as Ference's free position shot was stopped but later fell in the net for an own goal.  Just 19 seconds later Fox-Trudel scored as SHU took an 11-3 lead with 12:19 to go in the half.  Two goals from Tamasitis allowed the clock to run with the Griffins holding a ten goal lead.  Freshman Piper Conlan closed out the scoring with her first collegiate goal of her career.

SHU held a 31-28 advantage in shots.  The Griffins also held a 26-20 advantage in ground balls and a 10-9 lead in draw controls.

Kamille Ward posted 12 saves in cage while just allowing three goals in the win.  Kate Kada led the defensive attack with five caused turnovers and five ground balls.  Colleen Roy finished with four caused turnovers and a game high seven ground balls.

Tamasitis scored a game high three goals to lead the Griffins.  Frank, Kate Kada, Kristi Kada and Fox-Trudel each added two goals.  Frank finished with three assists.

SHU will next host #25 Mercyhurst in an important PSAC West contest on Saturday afternoon.  SHU is currently 7-0 in the west while the Lakers are in second place with a 5-2 record.
