Needing a win or a draw against visiting Cal Wednesday, Seton Hill had to go into extra time before an
Archie Lock PK less than a minute into the first overtime lifted the Griffins to a 1-0 victory and clinched a spot in the PSAC Tournament.
The Vulcans created some chances, particularly early, in the opening half. After a shot by
Elias Vangen was stopped in the opening two minutes, Cal had a flurry of chances. They generated three straight corners and managed a pair of shots inside a two-minute span. One shot off a corner was high and Griffin keeper
Bobby White made a save on the next attempt. Although Cal had a 7-4 advantage in shots in the opening half, White made four saves to keep them off the scoreboard and the match was 0-0 at intermission.
Seton Hill controlled more of the play in the second half, but just couldn't find the go-ahead goal. The Griffins posted six shots in the final 45 minutes and didn't allow the Vulcans one attempt. Two of Seton Hill's shot were on goal, but they were stopped. Seton Hill dialed up the pressure in the final 10 minutes, but while they kept the ball mainly in Cal's end, their only shot attempt was blocked with three minutes to play and the match remained scoreless after regulation.
The Griffins kept the pressure on to start the second half and it led to their key break. A ball was played into the box and Vangen's pursuit led to him being taken down in the box to result in a PK attempt. Lock stepped up and converted the kick for the game-winner. The goal, Lock's fourth of the year, not only gave the Griffins the 1-0 win but also clinched their first berth in the PSAC Tournament since 2018.
The strong second half and OT gave Seton Hill an 11-7 margin in shots and they also posted a 7-5 advantage in corners. Vangen's strong work rate throughout the match helped him finish with three shots, including one on goal, while Lock and Bryce Gandhi had two each. In goal, White's efforts in the first half was a major difference as well. He finished the afternoon with those four saves, as he notched his sixth clean sheet on the year, which is tied for the most in the PSAC.
The Griffins have one match left in the regular season, as they will host Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday at 2 pm for Senior Day. The match could be key, as Seton Hill (9-7-1, 6-2 PSAC) has 18 points in the conference, two behind co-leaders Gannon and Mercyhurst. If Seton Hill defeats UPJ and either Gannon loses at home against Slippery Rock or Mercyhurst is defeated at home by Cal, the Griffins would earn a home match in the PSAC Tournament Quarterfinals.
