Volleyball Season Ends at Mercyhurst

The Griffins closed out their 2021 season on the road at Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon.  The Lakers defeated the Griffins by the score of 3-1 in the season finale for the Griffins.  SHU ends the season with a 12-15 overall record and a 5-11 mark in PSAC West play.  

With Mercyhurst leading 5-2 in the first set, the Griffins responded with a 4-0 run to take a 6-5 lead.  Abby Oesterling and Cameron Baril had kills and Mara Yahner and Bobbi Rempe added a block in the run.  A kill from Yahner gave the Griffins a 15-13 lead.  Four straight from the Lakers put them back in front 17-15.  A kill and ace from Paige Cole gave SHU a 21-20 lead but the Lakers scored five of the final seven points of the set for a 25-23 first set win.

The Griffins used an early 7-0 run to take an 8-2 lead in the second set.  Kierstin Schade had three kills and a block in the run.  Mercyhurst answered the SHU run with a 7-0 run of their own to retake the lead.  A kill from Baril and a block from Yahner and Paige Cole put the Griffins in front 15-11.  A quick 4-1 run from the Lakers put them back in front 22-20.  Two kills from Yahner tied the set at 22 but the Lakers scored the final three points of the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.  

The Lakers built an early 5-1 lead in the third set.  Trailing 8-6, SHU ran off seven straight points to take a 13-8 lead.  Rempe, Cole and Schade each had kills in the run.  Two kills from Cole and a Carrie Leazer ace extended the lead to 16-11. Katie Koziarz and Elizabeth Ward each had a kill and block in a 4-0 run to extend the SHU lead to 20-13.  Three kills from Schade extended the match to four sets as SHU won 25-20.  

Mercyhurst jumped out to an early 9-0 lead in the fourth set and never looked back in a 25-22 match clinching set win.

Schade led the Griffins with 13 kills.  Cole added 11 kills and 17 digs.  Riley Rock paced the offense with 21 assists, Oesterling added 19.  Yahner and Ward each had four blocks.  Baril led SHU with 20 digs.
