Griffins Come up Short In Defensive Battle

Seton Hill continued their two game homestand with a PSAC West matchup with Edinboro on Saturday afternoon at Offutt Field.  Edinboro scored an offensive touchdown and added a special teams return for a 17-7 win over the Griffins in a defensive battle.  SHU drops to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the west while Edinboro improves to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the west.

Edinboro won the toss and took the ball to begin the contest.  That decision paid off for the Scots as they marched 83 yards on 12 plays for an opening drive touchdown on a 22 yard touchdown pass.  That 12 play drive lasted over six minutes.  The Griffins final drive of the quarter took them to the Edinboro 23 yard line when the quarter ended.

SHU moved to the Boro 11 yard line but had their 28 yard field goal blocked, keeping the score at 7-0.  SHU used 14 plays and nearly 11 minutes off the clock in the drive.  The Scots moved to the Seton Hill 25 yard line on their final possession of the half but Jayden Emberton-Gaines blocked a 42 yard field goal on the next to final play of the half.  SHU trailed by a 7-0 margin at the halftime break.

On their first drive of the second half, the Scots moved 60 yards in 16 plays, the final one a 27 yard field goal to take a 10-0 lead over the Griffins.  SHU trailed with 4:24 to play in the quarter.  The Griffins responded with a six play, 75 yard drive to cut the lead back to three points.  Logan Wiland rushed for 29 yards on the drive.  Jake McCormick hit Mark Bails with a 17 yard pass on the drive as well.  The final play of the drive was a 40 yard touchdown pass from McCormick to Taro Gaither.  SHU trailed 10-7 with 50 seconds to play in the third quarter.

Both teams punted on their first drives of the quarter.  Seton Hill took over on their own 45 yard line with 7:32 to play.  Wiland converted a 4th and two to start the drive.  He then later rushed for eight yards to move the ball to the Scots 34 yard line and another first down.  Two incompletions and a five yard pass to Gaither set up a 4th and five from the Scots 29 yard line.  SHU sent their kick team out, trying to tie the game with a 46 yard field goal but the kick was blocked and the Scots scooped and scored the blocked kick for a 56 yard return and a 17-7 lead.  The Griffins turned the ball over on downs on their final possession.

The Seton Hill defense held the Scots to just 229 yards of total offense.  They finished with 118 yards rushing and 111 yards passing.  They held the Scots to just three of 12 on third down conversions.

Wiland finished the game with 122 yards on 24 carries.  McCormick threw for 108 yards and a touchdown in the second half.  Gaither caught five passes for 71 yards.

Emberton-Gaines led the defense with 11 total tackles, a tackle for loss, a pass break up and a blocked kick.  Jaylen McDuffie added 10 tackles and a forced fumble.  Narrio Walks finished with eight solo tackles.  Lance Edwards recorded two sacks.

SHU will travel to Mercyhurst next weekend for another PSAC West contest.  Kick is set for noon.
