Edinboro Rallies for Five Set Win over the Griffins

The Griffins hosted Edinboro as they closed out their weekend homestand with a matchup on Saturday afternoon.  SHU took the first two sets but the Fighting Scots rallied to win the final three sets in a 3-2 win over the Griffins.  SHU drops to 9-10 overall and 2-6 in the West while the Scots improve to 14-3 overall and 7-1 in the west.

It was all Seton Hill in the early portion of the match.  Seton Hill hit .300 in the first set as they won easily by the score of 25-16.  They held the Scots to just a .033 hitting percentage.  SHU used an early 3-0 run to take a 5-2 lead and never trailed the rest of the set.  Paige Cole had two kills in the quick run and Riley Rock added the other.  Edinboro got back to within two at 12-10 before SHU ran off four straight points,  the final two on Cole kills.

In the second set, SHU came out of the gates fast, taking a 6-1 lead.  Mariela Alvarado ended the early run with an ace.  A 7-1 run in the middle of the set let the Griffins build their lead to 15-7.  Edinboro then responded with a 13-4 run to take a 20-19 lead.  After a Scots service error, two kills from Mara Yahner put the Griffins in front 22-20.  Elizabeth Ward gave the Griffins a set point with a kill and Ward and Bobbi Rempe combined for a block as SHU took the set by a 26-24 score.

Three straight kills from Yahner, Ward and Abby Oesterling put the Griffins in front 10-4 early in the second set.  Another Ward kill gave SHU a 12-7 lead.  It was at this point the match changed.  The Scots went on a 7-0 run to take a 14-12 lead.  They built their lead to 20-17 before SHU ran off four straight to retake a lead at 21-20.  The Scots were able to get back into the match with a 25-23 set win.

Edinboro took an early lead in the fourth set and never trailed as they evened the match with a 25-21 fourth set win to send the match to five sets.

In the race to seven, both teams got there within a point as the teams were tied at 7.  After a Scot kill, Katie Koziarz followed with a kill and Shannon Watkins added an ace as SHU took a 10-8 lead.  Following an Edinboro timeout, they ran off six straight points to put the set away.  SHU fought off three set points but could not fight off the fifth as the Scots won the set 15-13.

Cole led the Griffins with 17 kills.  Yahner just missed double figures with nine kills.  Ward added eight.  Oesterling finished with 18 assists while Watkins added 16.    Bobbi Rempe led SHU with 5 blocks.  Carrie Leazer posted a match high 26 digs.
