The Griffin field hockey team hosted Mercyhurst in a PSAC contest on Tuesday afternoon at Dick's Sporting Goods Field. SHU led 3-2 but gave up a late goal in regulation then the Lakers scored early in the second overtime period for a 4-3 win over the Griffins.
Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard in the first period of the contest. Both teams had two shots in the period with the Lakers having the only penalty corner in the quarter.
Merchurst opened the scoring just over four minutes into the second period as they took a 1-0 lead. It took the Griffins less than two minutes to tie the contest at one.
Gabriella Oxley finished a pass from
Haley Brenny to tie the score at 1-1. Just over a minute later, the Lakers retook the lead at 2-1. The Lakers took the 2-1 lead into the halftime break.
The game remained at 2-1 through the third period of action as neither team was able to score. The Lakers held a 4-3 advantage in shots but the Griffins led in penalty corners by a 4-1 margin.
Olivia Diebel opened the scoring in the third period just 1:11 into the period to tie the score at two. Less than a minute later
Jade Taylor put the Griffins in front. Taylor deflected a pass from Oxley into the Laker net to give the Griffins a 3-2 lead with 12:55 to play in regulation. Mercyhurst was able to tie the game up at three with 2:33 left in regulation which sent the contest into overtime.
Both teams stayed off the scoreboard in the first ten minute overtime period. Mercyhurst then scored the game winner 4:44 into the second overtime period for the 4-3 win,
Oxley finished with a goal and an assist in the loss.
Shannon Mccormac finished with 11 saves in cage. Brenny led the Griffins with three shots on goal. Diebel added two.
SHU will travel to #2 West Chester on Saturday afternoon for another PSAC contest at 4 PM.
