Griffins Defeat Defending National Champions Tampa, 5-4

Seton Hill continued their spring trip with a matchup with the fifth ranked Tampa Spartans on a perfect Monday afternoon for baseball.

The Griffins were able to knock off the defending national champions by the score of 5-4.  SHU improves to 7-2 overall while the Spartans fall to 11-6.

After two scoreless innings, the Griffins finally broke through in the top of the third inning.  After an out, Derek Orndorff singled.  He stole second and scored when Tommy Pellis came through with a two out RBI single.  With Pellis running, Tanner Froehlich doubled into the left center field gap to score Pellis and make it 2-0.  Froehlich then scored from second, just beating the throw home on an error by the Spartans.

The Griffins added another run in the fifth inning.  Orndorff led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch.  He later scored on a Pellis sacrifice fly.

The Spartans trimmed the lead to 4-1 with a two out RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.  SHU responded with a run in their half of the sixth inning.  They strung together three straight singles to push across a run.  Tyler Peterson singled and Orndorff reached on a bunt single before Owen Sabol came through with another two out RBI.

Tampa cut the lead to 5-3 with a two out, two run shot on a 0-2 pitch.  The Spartans trimmed the lead to 5-4 in the eighth using a double, ground out and wild pitch to cut the SHU advantage to one run.

Caiden Wood was able to earn the save with a strikeout to end the contest.

Orndorff led the offense with three hits.  Froehlich added a double and an RBI.  Pellis drove in two runs.

SHU will continue their spring trip on Tuesday when they meet #13 Embry Riddle in Daytona Beach.
