Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Splits First Two in Florida

The Griffin softball team opened its Florida trip with a pair of games on Sunday afternoon in Winter Haven, Florida.  They opened with a matchup with the University of Findlay and then took on WV Wesleyan in the finale.

Findlay scored six times in the fifth inning in route to a 10-1 victory over the Griffins.  SHU then responded with a 2-1 victory over WV Wesleyan in the second game of the day.  SHU is now 4-5 on the season.

Findlay opened with a run in the top of the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead.  They extended their lead to 7-0 with a six spot in the fifth inning.  The Oilers added three more runs in the seventh inning for a 10-0 lead.

The Griffins scored once in the bottom of the seventh.  Christiana Skrabak led off the inning getting hit by a pitch.  After two outs, Skyla Greco and Nichole McClendon each singled to push across the first run of the game.

Both pitchers kept their opponents off the board in the first three innings of game two.  SHU finally broke through in the fourth inning.  After one out, Skrabak walked and Chelsea Rohan reached on an error.  Samantha Estupinian doubled off the wall in to knock in Skrabak and give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.  Estupinian scored when Morgan Toal reached on an error.

WV Wesleyan got a run back in the bottom of that inning to cut the lead in half.

The Bobcats threatened in the seventh but the Griffins defense withstood the rally.  With one out and a runner at second, a single to right field looked to tie the game but Jenna Osikowicz hit Toal whose relay to Rohan at the plate was in time to cut down the tying run.  Alexis Vargas then snagged a liner to end the game.

Skyla Greco earned the win in the circle, going the distance.  She allowed one run on six hits.

SHU will continue play on Monday when they take on Wheeling and Saginaw Valley State in Winter Haven.
