Two Griffins Headed to Nationals; Griffins Fourth at Super Regionals

The Griffin wrestling team headed north on I-79 to Erie and Mercyhurst University and the 2020 NCAA Division II Super Regional Championships. 

Seton Hill advanced two wrestlers to the NCAA Division II National Tournament in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on March 13 and 14 with Frank Bonura finishing third at 125 pounds and Billy Bowlen finishing third at 197 pounds. Bowlen is now a three time national qualifier. 

SHU placed all ten wrestlers in the top five and earned 108 points for a fourth place finish in the event. 

Bonura opened the day with a 10-3 victory over Devin Flannery of Millersville in his first match.  He then dropped a 6-2 decision to top seed Brendan Howard of UPJ in the semifinals.  He won by fall (4:19) in the consolation semifinal to advance to the third place match.  Frank punched his ticket to nationals with a 12-4 win over Joseph Renne of Kutztown in the third place match. 

Bowlen opened his tournament with a 9-6 win over Raul Martinez of AIC in the quarterfinals.  He then dropped a 3-2 decision to Freddie Nixon of Gannon in the semifinals.  Billy advanced to the third place match with a 7-2 win over Alexi Castro of Ship.  Bowlen earned a nationals trip with a 10-6 win over Alex Delp of UPJ. 

Four Griffins just missed a trip to nationals with a fourth place finish.  Vincent Distefanis at 133, Logan McKoy at 157, Brandon Matthews at 174 and Jake Beistel at 285.  Both Matthews and Beistel dropped their matches in overtime. 

Distefanis won his first two matches, a 6-3 win over Jacob Lehman of Millersville and a 2-1 win over Eric Bartos of Hurst, before falling to Tyler Warner of UPJ 3-2 in the semifinals.  He won his next match before a 13-1 loss to Bartos in the third place match. 

McKoy began with a 4-2 win over Jacob Burgett of UPJ.  He then lost 8-5 to Evan Fisler of Gannon.  McKoy advanced to the third place match with a win by fall (6:17).  Logan dropped the third place match by an 11-5 score to Mike Clark. 

Matthews opened with a 4-1 win over Colton Babcock of Ship.  He fell in the semifinals to Brock Biddle of UPJ, 11-2.  Matthews advanced to the third place match with a win by fall (1:37).  Brandon fell in the third place match by a 3-1 score in sudden death overtime. 

Beistel dropped his first match to Derek Berberick of Ship by a 5-2 score.  He battled back in the consolation rounds with two wins by fall and a 6-2 win to advance to the third place match.  He was eliminated with a 3-1 overtime loss to Allan Beattie of UPJ in the third place match. 

Joel Cawoski (141), Austin Shaw (149), Alec Shaw (165) all finished fifth in the event while Joey Romjue was sixth. 

Cawoski won three matches on the day including one by fall and a 10-3 win in the fifth place match.  Austin Shaw earned two wins including one by fall and a 12-3 win in the fifth place match.  Alec Shaw earned three wins on the day and Romjue earned two wins on the day including one by fall.
