Griffins Earn PSAC Dual Win At Gannon

Seton Hill returned to PSAC Dual action with a pair of matches in Erie this weekend.  SHU opened the weekend with a matchup with #24 Gannon on Saturday afternoon. 

Each team won five matches with the bout ending tied at 17 but the Griffins were awarded the 18-17 win based on criteria.  SHU earned 66 bout points to 65 for the Knights to earn the victory on criteria.  SHU improves to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in PSAC duals while Gannon drops to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in PSAC duals. 

Frank Bonura opened the match with a dominating 17-2 tech fall win at 125 pounds which gave the Griffins the early 5-0 lead in the match.  Vincent Distefanis followed with a 3-1 decision win at 133 pounds where he defeated the second ranked wrestler in the region.  SHU led 8-0 after two matches. 

Tyler Kenney made it three in a row to open the match with a 7-5 decision win at 141 pounds.  SHU held an 11-0 lead thru three matches.  Austin Shaw followed with an 8-6 decision in a battle of nationally ranked wrestlers.  Shaw knocked off the 11th ranked wrestler to increase the SHU lead to 14-0. 

Gannon picked up two major decisions in the next two matches to cut the SHU lead to 14-8 with four matches to go.  The Knights followed with two decisions at 174 and 184 pounds to tie the match at 14 with two matches left. 

The Knights took their first lead of the night with a tough 4-3 decision at 197 pounds to take a 17-14 lead over the Griffins. 

Jake Beistel tied the match at 17 with a 13-6 decision win at 285 pounds in the final match of the night. 

The Griffins will continue their Erie trip with a PSAC dual against Mercyhurst on Sunday afternoon.
