Griffins Open PSAC Play With Five Set Win

Seton Hill opened PSAC play on Friday evening with a matchup with West Chester in the McKenna Center.

The teams split the first four sets but the Griffins took the fifth and final set for a 3-2 victory.  SHU improves to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in PSAC play while West Chester falls to 12-2 overall and 0-1 in PSAC play.

The Griffins came out of the gates flying, hitting .464 in the first set to take a 1-0 lead over the Rams.  SHU came out with an 11-3 run, forcing a Rams timeout.  SHU continued to control the set and won the set by a 25-12 score.  Viktoria Farian paced the Griffins with 5 kills in the set as SHU finished with 14 kills and just 1 error in 28 attempts.

In the early portion of the second set, it looked like the Griffins would continue to roll as they took a 12-5 lead.  After a Rams timeout, SHU continued to lead and took a 17-9 lead after an Erin Parks kill.  The Rams responded with an 11-1 run to take a 20-18 lead.  Taylor Sabol got the Griffins back to 20-19 but the Rams scored five of the final seven points to even the match at one.

West Chester opened the third set with three straight points, only to be answered with four straight from the Griffins.  A four point service run from Farian, including three aces put the Griffins in front 9-5.  Kills from Parks, Bobbi Rempe and Jillian Livorse pushed the SHU lead to 12-8.  Leading 20-16, SHU scored four straight points one each on kills from Sabol and Livorse to take a 24-16 lead.  Jessica Hanson gave SHU a 2-1 lead with a kill at 25-18.

The Rams led throughout the fourth set and tied the match at two with a 25-18 fourth set win.

With the fifth set tied at two, SHU went on a 4-0 run to start to take control of the set.  Two kills from Hanson and a Hanson/Sabol block keyed the run.  Back to back kills from Farian keyed another 4-0 SHU run that put them in front 11-5.  Two more Farian kills made the score 13-7.  Rempe gave SHU the win at 15-10 with a kill.

Viktoria Farian led the Griffins with a match high 19 kills. Jillian Livorse added 11 and Erin Parks 10. Taylor Sabol ran the offense with 46 assists. Farian added 24 digs.  Veronica Johns added 18 digs.  Livorse finished with 16 while Sabol and Parks each added 13.  Jessica Hanson led SHU with 4 blocks.
