Football Falls in Season Opener

The Seton Hill football program opened its season under new head coach Danny Day against East Stroudsburg on Saturday afternoon at Offutt Field.

Seton Hill got to within three at 21-18 in the third quarter but the Warriors scored ten unanswered points for a 31-18 victory over the Griffins.  ESU improves to 2-0 while SHU drops to 0-1.

Seton Hill won the toss and deferred their choice til the second half.  East Stroudsburg took the opening kickoff and went 89 yards in five plays to take an early 7-0 lead.  The Griffins responded on their first drive.  They marched 66 yards in 11 plays but had to settle for a 26 yard Hunter Miller field goal that cut the lead to 7-3 with 7:30 left in the first quarter.  The first quarter ended with the Griffins trailing the Warriors 7-3.

The Warriors took advantage of a short field after a SHU interception to take a 14-3 lead with 9:17 to play before the half.  They needed just two plays to go eight yards for the score.  After the Griffins punted on their next possession, Seton Hill drove 84 yards on 11 plays to increase their lead to 21-3 with 3:59 to play in the first half.  On their next possession the Griffins used a 52 yard Logan Wiland run to get into the red zone and Wiland plunged in from one yard out to trim the lead to 21-9 with 1:01 left.  Syeko Noble then intercepted an ESU pass and returned it to the Warriors 45 yard line.  Chris Jones hit Matthew Williams with a 15 yard pass and Wiland rushed for 14 yards to the ESU 14 yard line setting up a 33 yard field goal from Miller on the last play of the half.  SHU cut the lead to 21-12 at the half.

After East Stroudsburg missed a 34 yard field goal on their first drive of the second half, the Griffins took over at their own 20.  It did not take the Griffins long to score as Wiland raced 80 yards to the end zone with an incredible run to trim the lead to 21-18 with 9:52 to play in the quarter.  ESU answered with an eight play, 68 yard drive to push the lead back to ten at 28-18.  ESU took the 28-18 lead into the fourth quarter.

On the second play of the fourth quarter, the Warriors connected on a 49 yard field goal to extend their lead to 31-18.  Seton Hill was forced to punt on their next two possessions and an interception on their final possession allowed the Warriors to run out the clock.

Wiland led the Griffin offense with 236 yards on 24 carries.  He finished with 2 touchdowns.  The 236 yards are the third most rushing yards in a game in school history by a Griffin.  Kinan Humphrey, Matthew Williams, Taro Gaither and Wiland each had three receptions.  Miller was 2-2 on field goals.  Jayden Emberton-Gaines led the defense with 12 total tackles.  He had one tackle for loss and one forced fumble.  Fardan Allen added 11 tackles.

SHU will hit the road and travels to PSAC East favorite West Chester for another PSAC Crossover next Saturday.
