The Seton Hill field hockey team opened their season on Wednesday afternoon with a home matchup with Mercyhurst.
Seton Hill battled back to tie the game at one late in the fourth quarter but the Lakers scored the game winner just 2:03 into overtime for a 2-1 victory over the Griffins.Â
Mercyhurst came out strong in the first quarter, scoring a goal 7:37 into the quarter to take a 1-0 lead over the Griffins. The Lakers held a 4-0 advantage in shots in the period and also had a 4-0 advantage in penalty corners.Â
The Griffins began to build into the game in the second quarter. They registered two shots and held a 2-1 advantage in penalty corners in the quarter. The Lakers took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
The Lakers controlled most of the play in the third quarter but SHU keeper
Emma Jorgensen recorded three saves to keep the game at 1-0.
SHU controlled play for most of the fourth quarter and used that play to tie the contest with just under ten minutes to play.Â
Zyah Newsome hit a streaking
Wynnsome Gadson at the back post and Gadson was able to poke the ball past the Laker keeper to tie the game at one. The game remained tied at one heading into the first overtime period.Â
The Lakers had the ball first and were able to control play in the overtime period. They used that to find the game winner 2:03 into the overtime period on a shot over the keeper's head from the top of the circle.Â
Elizabeth Armbruster finished the first half with five saves. Jorgensen finished with ten saves in the second half and overtime.
SHU returns to action on Saturday when they host Mansfield.Â
