Griffins Continue to Advance in the PSAC Tournament

Seton Hill played their third elimination contest of the PSAC Tournament as they battled California (PA) on Saturday afternoon at Sargent Stadium in Johnstown, PA.  The Griffins scored five runs in two separate innings to remain alive in the PSAC Tournament with a 14-11 win.  SHU improves to 32-20 while Cal falls to 37-15.

The Vulcans jumped on top of the Griffins with a two out solo homer in the top of the first inning.  It did not take long for the Griffins to answer as Chris Law led off the bottom of the first inning with a homer on the second pitch he saw to tie the game at one.

Seton Hill then put up a five spot in the bottom of the second inning.  After an out, Austin Braendel doubled.  He scored on a Colton Carney single.  Law drew a walk and both runners moved up on an error on a pickoff attempt.  Nick Stotler followed with a double to knock both runners in and give SHU a 4-1 lead.  Parker Denny added a RBI double to make it 5-1.  After a Vulcan pitching change, Craig Lewis knocked in a run with an infield single.

California got back into the game thanks to some free passes from the Griffins as they scored three times on just one hit to trim the lead to 6-4.  Griffin reliever Ben Vicini did a great job of getting out of a bases loaded one out jam in the inning.  Vicini then stranded two in the top half of the fifth to keep it a two run lead for the Griffins.

SHU added a run in the fifth inning on a two out RBI single from Braendel.  The Griffins pushed across two more in the sixth inning.  Law drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on a two run bomb from Isaiah DiAndreth

CalU cut the Griffins lead to 9-8 in the top of the eighth inning.  The Griffins answered right back in the bottom half of the inning.  Stotler led off the inning with a single off the wall in left.  Denny followed with a bomb over the left field wall to give SHU an 11-8 lead.  SHU added an insurance run on a Braendel sacrifice fly.  The added two more runs on a wild pitch and an error to push the lead to 14-8.  The Vulcans scored three times in the ninth but Caiden Wood got a groundout to end the game.

Stotler and Denny led the offense with three hits.  Lewis, Ryan Grieco and Braendel each added two hits.  Denny finished with three RBI.  Stotler, Braendel and DiAndreth added two RBI.  Vicini earned the win in relief.  Caiden Wood earned the save.

SHU will next meet West Chester with a spot in the PSAC final on the line.
