After a day off yesterday, the Griffins returned to the field on Thursday morning with a matchup with Malone in Winter Park, Florida on Rollins campus. SHU led 4-1 but Malone scored the final four runs, including two in the bottom of the ninth to walk off the Griffins by a 5-4 score. SHU dropped its fourth straight and falls to 4-5 on the season. Malone is now 8-4 on the season.
The Griffins scored single runs in the first three innings to take a 3-1 lead.
Jordan Fiedor was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. He advanced to third on a
Tommy Pellis single.
Nick Stotler drove in Fiedor with a sacrifice fly.
Andrew Chuba led off the second inning with a double. He scored on a
Chris Law single to make it 2-0. Malone got a single run in their second inning. With one out in the third, Pellis hit a solo shot to give the Griffins a 3-1 lead.
In the fifth,
Jamie Wrabel led off with a single. Fiedor was hit by a pitch again to put runners on first and second. After a strikeout, Stotler singled in Wrabel to give SHU a 4-1 advantage.
Malone trimmed the lead to 4-3 with two runs in the sixth inning. The Pioneers then walked off the Griffins in the ninth. With two outs, the Pioneers used a walk, single and balk plus a game winning walk off hit on an 0-2 pitch for a 5-4 win.
The Griffins did not take advantage of having runners on as they were just 4-17 with runners on and 2-14 with runners in scoring position.
Pellis and Stotler each added 3 hits. Chuba and Law added two.
The Griffins return to action on Friday night when they meet defending national champion Augustana (SD) at 7:30 PM.
