Second Half Defense Carries Griffins to PSAC West Road Win

Seton Hill hit the road for a midweek PSAC West contest at Gannon on Wednesday evening.  The Griffins used a very strong second half defense in route to a 68-54 victory over the Golden Knights.  SHU held the Knights to just 16% from the floor in the half.  SHU improves to 7-14 overall and 5-10 in PSAC play while the Knights drop to 8-14 overall and 6-9 in PSAC play.

Over the first seven minutes of the contest, the teams exchanged baskets resulting in six ties, the last one being 13-13 with 12:45 to play in the half.  Gannon scored five in a row to take an 18-13 lead.  Malik McKinney answered with four straight to trim the lead to one.  A layin from Nathan Davis tied the game at 25 with just over four minutes to play in the half.  Trevor Blondin gave SHU a 30-29 lead with a three pointer with 2:24 to play.  The Knights closed the half on an 8-1 run to take a 37-31 halftime lead. 

The Griffins opened the second half on a 9-4 run to cut the Knights lead to one just five minutes into the half.   A Blondin three gave SHU a 45-43 lead with 12:55 to play. 

With Griffins leading by one, Blondin drilled a three and Davis followed with two more to push the Griffins lead to 58-48 with 6:13 remaining.  Anthony Karabatsos hit a three pointer with 4:40 to play to extend the lead back to double figures at 61-50.  Gannon would not get any closer over the final four minutes as the Griffins won their second in a row.

Seton Hill outscored the Knights 37-17 in the second half.  The Griffins shot 48% from the floor in the second half while holding the Knights to just 5-32.

Trevor Blondin led the Griffins with a game high 26 points. Nathan Davis finished the game with 23 points. Malik McKinney was the third Griffin in double figures with 10.

SHU returns home on Saturday when they host Slippery Rock at 3 PM.  Seniors Blondin, Milenko Predic and Brandon Alston will be honored before the game.
