The Griffins made a second straight trip up I-79, this one to Erie as SHU battled Mercyhurst in PSAC West action on Saturday. The Lakers used a 26-12 fourth quarter to pull away from the Griffins in an 88-66 road loss. SHU is now 15-10 overall and 9-9 in PSAC play. Mercyhurst improves to 9-15 overall and 6-11 in the PSAC.
SHU remains in fourth place in the PSAC West with the loss. The Griffins are a game ahead of Slippery Rock and Pitt Johnstown and two games ahead of Gannon for the final home playoff game in the west.
Seton Hill took an early 7-3 lead just two minutes into the contest. Over a minute and a half stretch, the Lakers used a 9-0 run to take a 19-11 lead with 1:38 to play in the quarter. Jumpers from
Tiana Stewart and
Lexi Civittolo hit jumpers before the end of the quarter as SHU trailed 22-15 after one quarter of play.
Mercyhurst built their lead to 31-19 with 7:49 left in the first half.
Megan Marecic hit three three pointers as the Griffins cut the Laker lead to 33-30 with over three minutes remaining in the half. Back to back layups from
Cheyenne Trest kept the lead at three but four straight from the Lakers gave them a 41-34 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, the Griffins cut the Laker lead to six points multiple times but each time the Lakers built their lead back up to double figures. Mercyhurst lead 62-54 at the end of the third quarter.
Over the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, the Griffins were outscored by a 19-4 margin as the Lakers opened up an 81-58 lead midway thru the quarter. The Griffins got to within 18 but that was as close as they would get in the loss.
Marecic led the Griffins with a game high 23 points. Civittolo added 14 points and
Katie Nolan was the third in double figures with 11.
SHU returns home to host Pitt Johnstown on Wednesday in an important PSAC West battle with the fourth and final home playoff game on the line.
