Shaw, Bowlen Place at Midwest Classic

Three Griffin wrestlers advanced to day two of the highly competitive Midwest Classic on Sunday in Indianapolis, Indiana. 

Two Griffins were able to place in the event as the team finished in a tie for fifteenth place at the event with 51.5 team points. 

Leading the way for the Griffins was Austin Shaw who placed fourth at 149 pounds.  Shaw opened his day with a 15-12 win in the first match of the day.  He then defeated #11 Brik Filippo of Central Oklahoma by fall (1:46) to advance to the consolation semifinals.  Filippo had defeated Shaw on Saturday.  Austin then defeated Dominick Means of Gannon by an 8-3 score to advance to the consolation finals.  Shaw was defeated by Josiah Rider of Adams State in the final.  Rider is ranked 7th in the country.  

Billy Bowlen earned an eighth place finish at the event.  He advanced to the final eight with a 11-3 win in his first match of the day.  He then suffered a 7-3 defeat to #10 Freddie Nixon of Gannon in the consolation semifinals.  Bowlen then dropped an 11-5 decision in the seventh place match. 

Joel Cawoski was defeated in his first match of the day to be eliminated before the round of eight.

The Griffins will wrestle their home opener on Thursday evening when they host Davis & Elkins at 8 PM.
